George Jonas Quote

“The issue isn't gun control but state control -- obtuse and arbitrary state control, state control run amok. ... Forget guns. If Dr. Hudson, Mr. Turnbull, Dr. Gingrich and others end up in jail it won't be for their guns but our liberties.”

~ George Jonas

"The Issue Isn't Gun Control but State Control", National Post, July 23, 2003, p. A-15

The two issues are not directly related to each other... thus the quote is nothing more than mindless babbling of a confused fool.

Joe, Rochester, MI

I'd love to see a few of our freedom abusing legislators end up in prison for violating our rights and liberties.

E Archer, NYC

The two issues ARE directly related to each other! We know who the confused fool is. The argument against an armed citizenry is that individuals cannot be trusted with weapons for their own defense BUT an army of police and mercenaries under the direction of the State can be trusted. It is ludicrous to claim that individuals cannot be trusted but groups of individuals under CONTROL by other individuals can be trusted. Talk about babbling double-speak.

David L. Rosenthal

State control has not yet begun to raise its ugly head in the U.S. Just wait a couple of years more, and you will see that today we have it good.

Right on the mark for A of Reston.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. In 1911, Turkey established gun control. . From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. In 1938, Germany established gun control. . From 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews and others, who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. In 1935, China established gun control. . From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. In 1964, Guatemala established gun control. . From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. In 1970, Uganda established gun control. . From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. In 1956, Cambodia established gun control. . From 1975 to 1977, one million “educated” people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. The number of defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: ABOUT 55 MILLION! So, the next time someone tries to tell you that this country needs MORE gun control laws, ask them: “Who do YOU want to round up and exterminate?”

State control is completely apparent, due to gun licensing and regulations. You can't regulate and license a 'free society' or 'freedom'. Even the Boy Scout merit badge, American Business, readily acknowledges this fact. ( (Requirement 1-A) 'Freedom,' or a 'free society,' does not equal 'anarchy'; Freedom thrives with just and upright laws that punish the criminal, only after he has committed a crime against another. Government infiltration into the moral lives of its citizens is corrupt and tyrannical; my government has already proven me guilty and unfit of owning a hand-gun, rifle, weapon, or any other 'tool,' based on its doling out 'privilege' and 'license'. As a driver, I am already proven unfit to drive until I have complied with the government. As a citizen, I am proven unworthy of handling particular weapons without its permission. Such 'titles of nobility' are strictly prohibited by the Constitution. But, as we have seen by so many, perceived safety (through licensing a regulation), by government infiltration, is far more important than the Constitution -- after all, as King George has been noted for saying, "It's just a god-damn piece of paper," right?

The "A" from Reston, what ? How are the 2 not related. The 2nd Amendment identifies an inalienable right for an individual to defend himself, family, friends, country, etc. against an oppressive government. When that oppressive government orders 2500 light armored vehicles for use against its citizens and the CIA states it is not out of possibilities to use drones against U.S. citizens within the Continental U.S. - taking away the means to protect one's self from such oppressive government is one in the same.

I did not send the quote above nor do I agree with it. This comment of mine was made months, maybe a year ago and had nothing to do with Reston's comments this time.
My comment this time is to all readers of Liberty Quotes is do not believe anything that appears above my name. The quotations above my name many times before and forever after will be false. The author of this program cheats by reprinting previous comments that have nothing to do with the current quotation.

Dick, This is the 2nd time you have claimed that we are making posts for you. We do not, have not, and have no need to. Your comment was made the last time this quote was sent out in August 2006 as was also Reston's to which you replied.

So let me express to the readers of Liberty Quotes that Dick does not stand behind his comments - even he does not believe what he says apparently (not that he is actually saying anything...). Yes he did make the comment, and yes he did agree with Reston (as he frequently does). You can check a cached version of this page with Google and see that his comment has been here for years. Get a grip, Dick.

You have the last word of course and my comments will be denied by you, but of course you and I know what kind of person you are. Anyone who repeats comments made seven years prior and to a different quotation is that kind of person. What a scum you are.

Editor: Thanks for all your efforts and integrity. I see some of the comments attributed to me from past posts and have to say to my self; hmmm - self - I don't remember saying that but that Mike from Norwalk is one smart guy :-) I would almost without exception comment differently today but, your re-posts have always been honest and accurate. Again, thanks for all your efforts and integrity ! ! !

Wow, Dick, how ignorant can you be? This quote page with its associated comments is over 8 years old. People add comments to it over the years. Some quotes are emailed out to the list more than once every 5 years or so. The link to the quote is to the same page as the last time the quote was sent out, so the previous comments are still there. We do not add comments to the quote pages -- if there is a comment made by you, it was put there by you -- we have the IP addresses to prove it. Perhaps you do not understand the concept of a blog and the ongoing discussion for each of these quote pages. And why would we purposefully add your comments when you don't actually make an argument? It doesn't really add any value to the discussion. If we were to re-post comments from others on a page, we would certainly pick more intelligent posts. If you don't like what you have said in the past, I suggest you post a comment that you would be proud to see 10 years later. So far, you are only embarrassing yourself.

Editor, Liberty Quotes

Thanks, Mike. I do appreciate the thought with which you respond to the quotes -- your contribution brings value to the content, and I love your expression 'the statist theocracy that infests this land' :-) Yes, I can see how one's opinions about these quotes can change over time. As for dick, his views appear to depend on the political party in power -- i.e. the media is corrupt during the Bush years, but they speak only truth during Obama's tenure. If only life were that simple.
