False Thomas Jefferson Quote

“Liberty is to the collective body, what health is to every individual body. Without health no pleasure can be tasted by man; without liberty, no happiness can be enjoyed by society.”

Thomas JeffersonThomas Jefferson
~ Thomas Jefferson

Misattributed to Jefferson. The quote is from Henry St. John, Viscount Bolingbroke, Letters on the Spirit of Patriotism: On the Idea of a Patriot King, and on the State of Parties at the Accession of King George the First (London: A. Millar, 1752), 120.

Too bad the GOP are so intent upon taking this liberty from the collective in service to their special interest groups (the rich & the radical religious right).

Great words from a great man. There is much we can learn from the wisdom of our forefathers. We Americans can bring this country back in line with the ideals and vision of our forefathers if we focus with intent on their wise counsel and act accordingly.

It's hard to say if he promotes Liberty for the collective or the individual here, poorly stated or misquoted.

Too bad the liberal left are so intent upon taking this liberty from the collective in service to their special interest groups (the lazy and the thieving left).

Lots of people say I am sick - but I often feel content. And if society is oppressed, it is still free to revolt. Michael Moore is a major investor in Haliburton. And where might all the other far-left multimillionheirs have their millions invested? Far-left and far-right meet at the ends, where they are the same.

Too bad the quote comes from Henry St. John Bolingbroke in "The Idea of a Patriot King" and not Jefferson. Blingerbroke was a favorite writer of King George III.

Please double check the source of this quote.  There appears to be an error...I had this already in my collection of health quotes  "Liberty is to the collective body what health is to every individual body. Without health no pleasure can be tasted by man; without liberty, no happiness can be enjoyed by society." -- Henry St. John (1678-1751) 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, English politician and philosopher

Thank you, Chuck.  It appears you are right  we have this quote also attributed to Henry St. John, too.  Although Jefferson is sometimes mistaken as the author of this quote, the source appears to be:

Henry St. John, Viscount Bolingbroke, Letters on the Spirit of Patriotism: On the Idea of a Patriot King, and on the State of Parties at the Accession of King George the First (London: A. Millar, 1752), 120.
