He died a military General. This quote should be put in the context of its time in history and North American tribes "global knowledge" rather than present day 20/20 hindsight. At the time of this quote there were tribes that had respect for others and the "new age religion" was Christianity; there was no knowledge of other countries religions, leaders or religious/cultural crimes against humanity. He was busy, with his allies, fighting to save a piece of the North American paradise for his people and their supporters. He lived life to the fullest, as he says in his quote.
