Misplaced trust. It's like the people Stalin sent to the Gulags. They all knew they were innocent and trusted their government to straighten out the mistake.  And ten years later they got out with a ruined life ahead of them. If it's happened some place, it can happen any place.  And Communists are nothing if not completely ruthless.
