You are a misanthrope or hater of mankind. The masses were not against Galileo just the chruch and its authoritarian system. Gore succeeded to some extent against the authority of the Bush administration and other naysayers. His efforts were not from the masses but from a small group of the population of the world - highly trained sceintists. Like Galileo his efforts will gain universal recognition in time. He made a good start with a Nobel Peace Prize. His efforts certainly did not spring from group think. Only the ignorant and those that see a senister political motive behind every thing think that. Since you brought it up I am not complaining about my life. I have an F250 6.0 diesel and fifth-wheel tailer in Texas, several cars here including a 1969 Buick Riviera that I put $10,000 into last year, three boats, and looking for another. Life is good I don't work. So now you know. That listing has nothing to do with nothing but since you were so impolite to bring it up, there you have it. So according to Mr. McCain I am only middle class since I make less than $5 million a year. But yes I have a son and grand nephews and I do have a vested interest in this world, its population, its happiness and success. The way we live in community effects the way we will live individually. As the world population grows that fact will become more pervasive. Again I truly feel at core you are misanthropic or a hater of mankind. Archer you are committing the intelectual death of Al Gore by shunning him right now. You are so shallow and blind I just can't believe it! Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/17/08 re: Carl Sagan quote Archer Mr. Logan said he believes in a governmetn by the "Voice of The People". Lets drop it. I stopped reading your post after I got to that phrase. You all are just blowing (writing) a bunch of hot air. In all societies or groups the Voice of the People or group or club is 51%. Cut the s*&$. You are so deep in it it is pathetic. As far as insanity you are beyond him. There is no "collective" because the make up of the 51% per cent changes constantly with any given issue. 3Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/17/08 re: Galileo Galilei quote People on this site tend to be (I use the word tend as a substantial understatement) extremely contrarian. They feel that the further they are in the minority then the more they are correct. Thus the silly argument over words like Republic and Democracy and now the more Universities (you know those socialist instituitions) and governments (IPCC) produce studies showing the effects of human produced pollution on our environment the more these narrow people reject it as a communist haywire plot. Ken these people suffer from the same mentality flaw as those who rejected fluoride, the metric system and any thing else that is a change as being an alien, sinsiter plot. We have discussed recently on this site the subject of the way "truth" unfolds and becomes "universal" or at least more universal. I find your position to be akin to these past foibles that got us now into signifcant environmental troubles like the Everglades, killing off the Bald Eagle etc. It is a shame that many can only see things retrospectively and not prospectively. Some think it is a good idea to learn from our past, I don't see it in regards to the environmental issue at least not on this site. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/17/08 re: Carl Sagan quote Mr. Logan obviously has an emotional problem which is beyon my expertise. He and I have agreed that the government of the United States of America is a VOICE OF THE PEOPLE GOVERNMENT. He cannot move on cannot move forward. What is the saying about people who keep doing the same thing expecting a different result result: they are insane! Mr Logan obviously perceives his purpose on this earth, like Sysphus of old who pushed a huge bolder up a hill time after time for all eternity just to watch it roll back down again, is to promote the use of the word Republic and denergrate the word Democracy. His efforts reach far beyond what any sane individual would succomb to. Unfortunately Sysphus was a Greek myth and he was and is stuck in his rut for all time. Mr. Logan can get off of his treadmill if he chooses. He indicates right up until the present and inability to do so. It is sad very sad. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/17/08 re: Carl Sagan quote Logan lets just stay with "voice of the people" as the form of our government as an understanding between you and I. It works great for me. To you that means a "republic" I guess, and to me it means a "democracy". But since you seem to go ballistic over words just stay with the above prhase and all will be at peace. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/17/08 re: Carl Sagan quote Much of industry Ken ( and yes they to imploy scientists) are also pushing for a change in the way we do thinks viz a viz climate change/golbal warming. It is not government versus the private intelligentsia or industry. The world is all in this together. I don't think there is more than about 10 regular contributors to this site. This does not a ground swell of public opinion, or of scholarship make. You sound like those guys who are holocaust deniers. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/16/08 re: Carl Sagan quote Ken you may be right but for years it seems to me the term being used was "global warming" and it seems when Bush got on board the term he used was "climate change" and it appeared to me to be a subtle or begrudging acceptance of the issue but with a different nuance. Of course the phrases do not mean the same thing. Climate change is much more ambiguous than is the phrase global warming. Intionally creating ambiguity is an interesting phenomenon. The word "republic" is ambiguous while the word "democracy" is much more clear and descriptive. Creating amibiguity is a big step towards bamboozelment and fuzzy thinking. 24Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/16/08 re: Galileo Galilei quote I think you have lousy tastes in men Ken. My admiration for Mr. Al is for his brain and his steadfastness to what he believes in, not for his body. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/16/08 re: Carl Sagan quote I don't care what you asked me Logan. I asked you to talk to McCain and Bush. The Constitution is what it is, what the hell is in a name, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. A society run by the will of the people 51% is called a "representative democracy". If you wish to call it a republic keep on trucking dude. I again implore you to read Ken above and get real Logan, get real. What the hell do you think voice of the people means Logan, stop being a an hole here. We are in absolue agreement here. I tell you what look up and choose a foreign translation for the word "democracy" and we will use that to describe the government of the United States of America. The word republic means only any government that is not a monarchy it does not describe a government run by the voice of the people. Please quit addressing me directly on this issue. 14Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Galileo Galilei quote Cute Ken but maybe just maybe you are a little confused. Maybe industry and their coupon clippers are the church and Gore is the Galileo. Here is hoping we all live long enough to see who apologizes to whom. I promise I will if need be, any other takers. The fact that many on this site pooh pooh Nobel Prizes, international recognition, Hollywood Oscars the jumping on the bandwagon of T. Boone etcetera and still adhere to their illusions or delusions show what a far out segment of the public and of reality they really represent. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Carl Sagan quote Ken I think "climate change" is a Bush or conservative invention, rather than using the former "global warming". It is similar to Logans attempt to use "republic" in place of what ever one else calls "democracy". Other examples of this kind of soft lying or changing the argument is Bushs "time horizon" instead of the former "deadline" etcetera. The classic is the change of "estate tax" into the dreaded phrase "death tax". The "death tax" phrase was intentionally created by a wealthy California family intent on getting out from under the tax. Conservatives or at least those opposed to estate tax thought it cute and effective so they changed the lexicon in order to try to change the tax laws It is a way of taking over a perceived competitors thoughts or position (intellectual property) without giving them any credit by simply changing the name. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Carl Sagan quote Bush calls it a democracy, McCain bemoans the Russian invasion of Georgia not because it is a republic (they are a dime a dozen) but he says it is a democracy and I think you can read between the lines that he means that this is a precious thing. When an entity steps on a free and self-willed (democracy)people in this way some sensitive souls like McCain and Bush see it as a crime against humanity. Now if Georgia were only a republic and ruled by some dictator or oligarch its crushing may not seem so tragic. Logan I told you above and you did not listen, I will tell you again in capitals; THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE SENATE AND THE PRESIDENCY are democratic institutions. All are elected by the people. Archer is incorrect that 51% or 50.1% are not democracy. Archer Logan opened this discussion and wishes it to continue so you take a f^%$ rest. Logan I think you would be better writing to Bush and McCain and ask them what they mean about their love of democracy. I am not going to have any influence on your choices of words. I suggest you read Ken, from Milford above. (Democracy: in pure form a government where all power is vested in the people; In practice a government where power is vested in representatives elected by all of the people.) 63Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Galileo Galilei quote You do not have to be a scientist to care about a science or to preach it. He personally chose to be a spokesman for this issue that was important to him as early as 1988. He has been consistently interested in this issue. Like him or not believe him or not he has accomplished a remarkable thing. Now Mr. Pickens wants to get into the act. There must be something to what they are saying. A little cynicism is cute but one needs to know when it is to much. Maybe Gore and Pickens should recant and just live at peace with you guys. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Charles Darwin quote Five stars to you Bryan. I had a similar thoght but did not post it. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Carl Sagan quote Bryan the Declaration was adompted by majority vote, in fact it was unanimous as was the vote for the Constitution unanimous as well as was its ratification by all of the states, that is democracy. The Constitution initally provided for representatives to be elected by the people, that is democracy. Later the Constitution was amended by all of the states to say that Senators shall be elcected by the people, that amendment and those elections are all an act of democracy. The election of the Electoral College is an act of democracy. There are hundreds of Constitutional Republics in the world, some of the constitutions call for one party rule and dictatorship like North Korea for example. One Pres. candidate memoans the Russian invasion of the democratic country of Georgia and our current President is trying to establish democracy in Iraq and the Middle East. So what gives with people trying to tear it down in this our very own country. Lets get over this and move on. We are a "government of, by and for the people" a democracy. 1Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Rebazar Tarzs quote It is a matter of sensitivity. The environmentalist like the dog is sensitive to these issues and knows that from one flea an entire infestation will occur. Lady Bird Johnson said it all when she said, "Miles of trash from little eyesores grow." And was it B. Franklin who said "Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves." I think these sentiments are the ones that we should live by as far as environment. 56Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Galileo Galilei quote The key word here - is "In questions of science" and Galileo is absoutely correct. But some say he was also correct to recant correct science and relent to ignorant Papal Authority in order to have a decent and respectful life for him and his family rather than being excommuicated from church and society. Thus his story is evidence that some times one most go along with the riotousness of the crowd or corrupt power for a spell and prove his science over time. "Humble reasoning" methinks is a key word also, indicating the need to persevere quietly and respectfully against the riotousness crowd or scientifcally challenged authority. Al Gore is a prime example of suffering some what in silence for eight years while humbling preaching his science. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Charles Darwin quote As on this site when some views concerning the understanding of terms like majority rule and democracy were accepted by some who had previously eschewed such notions. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/15/08 re: Carl Sagan quote Very thought provoking! It reminds one of the old saw, "The victorious write the books" (and thus do the bamboozle) I don't think that is totally true. Losers write books also but fewer read them, thus the more people are influenced by the victors point of view. Nothing succeeds like success. Some can differentiate between a Democracy and a Constitutional Republic. A Democracy is a government where the power resides with the people. A Constitutional Republic is a geographic entity in which a written document or constitution describes the nature of the government. The nature of that constitutional government can be written to set up any type of government from Aristocracy, Oligarcy, Dictatorship etcetera. The term constitutional republic is a general term and democracy is a specific term. Totally different "animals", Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/14/08 re: Thomas Jefferson quote Archer you said we are controlled by controllers. The sentence should read: Mike said the problem with America is too many opinions. It would appear that he wants more control over peoples freedom to have opinons. It sounds like you and he should be fighting over whether or not we need more controllers over peoples opinions or less. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/14/08 re: Thomas Jefferson quote Jim don't you think things can be funny but not serious? 1 Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/14/08 re: Thomas Jefferson quote "By beholding we become changed", Garbage in garbage out. What we put into our minds affects our worldview and the course of our lives. Those who argue TV has no effect on anyone including children should consider this quote. Read newspapers carefully, it may not contain intentional falsehood, but rumour and unsettled truth, and of course anyone can make a mistake. Most news items are part of an unfolding story and the truth does not come out until the end. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/14/08 re: Thomas Jefferson quote I give it a five for humour and a thumbs down for lack of seriousness. Most of us know the confusion caused by committees or group think, it is everywhere not just in government. Speaking of humour Archer says we or at least he is subject to being controllled by government controllers, Mike from Norwalk says the problem with America is that people have too many opinions which equates to lack of control or freedom. So thanks for the laugh guys. 1Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/13/08 re: Rebazar Tarzs quote So Ken you reject the idea of having any regret over the Ohio River that caught on fire, and you just consider that okay? You show some remorse with the cornflake argument. You have some redeeming qualities or at the least an opening towards gaining some redeeming qualities. You know very well that acid rain from industry and volcanos are two different things, I think your sincerity was slipping there. 1Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/13/08 re: Rebazar Tarzs quote Ken am I to assume that you believe that river polution and acid rain were inevitable? And thus carbon dioxide "pollution" is not pollution at all but an inevitable natural occurrence? May I assume that you believe that the earth is not affected by the flora and fauna that exist upon it. Is it not affected by the human beings that exist on it? (Are not human beings part of the fauna?} Previous 25 Next 25 SaveOk2 Share on Facebook Tweet Email Print
