As there has been little response to this quote I feel it my duty to provide a little credence in its honor: Detachment and non-attachment is not some kind of fancy new trend, the practice of non-attachment has been around for thousands of years – they new the importance of it then and today the same principles still apply. Simply, it means NOT TO CLING, not to hold onto things or thoughts, but to let your mind empty itself to allow room for your imagination and creative expression – to be closer to your Self, your spirit, and others. Above all, it allows your Self calmness and to mingle with the Universe and eternity. So, now that’s all said and done, try it out, just sit back, concentrate, and start kicking out those circling thoughts, greed, aggression, anger, hate, and ego – there’s ton’s of it there, just start getting rid of it, start the process of detachment. Suddenly the world will start to feel fresh, light and exciting again, and this new day, this moment, will be full of adventure. Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/29/07 re: Buddha quote Perhaps the religious right should take heed - Buddhism has always been about finding yourself from within. Though in American he would be castigated as one of those Liberals, a socialist, a communist and fascist, probably like Christ would be. Today fascism, with the far right and fundamentalists, is staring you in the face and you don't even know it. 3 Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/26/07 re: Sir Richard Francis Burton quote On the understanding that the gentleman is honorable - Most of my resources confirm Burton only one said Heine 3 Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/26/07 re: Albert Camus quote Perfect! Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/25/07 re: Isaiah Berlin quote The reason for the thumbs down is the statement is to black and white and that's easy - there is no true feeling or understanding of the reality of human existence in this quote. The hypocrisy is unbelievable -- it's OK to have policy when there is law (not necessarily Order) but before when law had not been the direction of the state, when there was no social order, you would take without remorse. Quote of the century: "The American Indians found out what happens when you don't control immigration." We came here and killed our way across America and now when social reform requires you to give back a little you stamp your foot and say no. The great oxymoron must be associating socialism and fascism in the same sentence -- socialism has its roots in anti government. Before we can truly move forward there needs to be harmony amongst the four human groupings -- the masses, the warriors, intellectuals, and the merchants. Therefore, we must rethink our arguments when faced with one understanding -- which one Group (varn■as) dominates. 3 Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/20/07 re: Benjamin Constant quote Love it! that could have been said yesterday Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/20/07 re: James Madison quote Where are those citizens today while our liberties are being eroded? We all too easily give up our freedom for temporary security (I think BF said that) and then once the threat has been vanquished our freedom is not restored. When you chop away at an apple to dig out bad bit you have chopped more good than you have bad, likewise with totalitarianisms, they manipulate the public into thinking there is a threat and then the pen comes out and they start to chop. All things are manipulated to satisfy those who have an agenda be it good or bad. It’s not always a good thing to say what’s on your mind; those are the things that are the ambers of war. So being politically correct is not necessarily a bad thing it’s just a matter of being considerate. Politic is a matter of life and we experience it as we go about our daily chores – those that have the responsibility of governing us are just an extension of the individual politic, but its practice/meaning is the same. To say something that you know to be derogatory and that’s not been provoked is uncouth. Rights can mean different things within time, what we considered to be right 200 years ago is not necessarily considered right today. Rights in their absolute state can not exist in a world of humans that’s why we are here. By the way, what was the first experiment on our liberties? 3Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/19/07 re: Patrick Henry quote Unfortunately it's your contempt for the values that Christ preached that is the cause for hypocrisy on the highest of levels. How dare you preach the word of God and say our country was founded on his teachings when those same people were responsible (I'm presuming like you did of me that you are a Christian) for killing thousands of Indians (genocide is what it was) - yes you may feel comfortable in your living room but the sword you swing without knowledge is the brave heart's remorse. If Christ came back again I'm sure he would suffer the same fate under the religious fundamentalists. Lastly, it is you that have the gall to expect a quote to go unchallenged - again hypocrisy rears its head on the tails of home-grown ethics and morality - let God be in your heart not in your scorn. By the way you were wrong. 3Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/19/07 re: Patrick Henry quote Why would God choose a nation over the protection of children, over the millions that starve to death, over the millions that die at the hands of despots, over the genocide that we perpetrated and later denounce as evil – such a choice is unimaginable? I leave God out of this speech and give it four. Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/14/07 re: Benjamin Franklin quote Now I know where Bertrand Russell got this from... Part of Russell's ten comandments Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/14/07 re: Woodrow Wilson quote I have mixed feelings about this one - I'll take honorable liberty from any quarter, though I do agree with the last statement. 1 Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/14/07 re: Mahatma Mohandas K. Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/4/07 re: Felix Frankfurter quote A great quote - though it may be a personal goal once distributed confidence and security is in doubt. 1 Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/1/07 re: Simon Heffer quote How much more suffering and bloodshed is America willing to endure before the country comes to terms with the truth - its amazing how pride gets in the way of truth 6 Reply Robert, Sarasota 6/1/07 re: Ernest Renan quote Nothing is without consequence and the fight for freedom even less so 1Reply Robert, Sarasota 5/22/07 re: Nicolas-Sebasstien Chamfort quote America was responsible for terrible acts of genocide and we have no right to preach - OK we have a right but let it be just. Our foreign policy stinks and is the cause of terrorism as we know it today. What hypocrisy to criticize the UN when America has interfered with other governments and supported extreme right wing despots. We are doing such a great job of messing in our own bed I doubt very much if the UN wants us as bedfellows and as for socializing America that has to be number 756 on their list. P.s the quote is very confusing - history is history. 2Reply Robert, Sarasota 5/14/07 re: H. L. Mencken quote Excellent Reston - the free-thinkers are crucified by mediocrity - if Christ reappeared I'm sure we would crucify him or her again. If you need religion to be kind and loving then both will allude you until the day you die. Reply Robert, Sarasota 5/14/07 re: Charles de Gaulle quote Sometimes a benevolent master is needed and sometimes not -- Christ could be called a benevolent master. Unfortunately the world is full of unscrupulous and self-serving masters with our own not too far from the top. Reply Robert, Sarasota 5/7/07 re: Alexis de Tocqueville quote He got it half right - whats faith to do with morality? The most immoral, have and are still in power, those professing faith and family values. Reply Robert, Sarasota 5/4/07 re: David Friedman quote But if not we 99 dead old ladies 28Reply Robert, Sarasota 5/4/07 re: Patrick Henry quote Who decides if you are able or not? Editor you must have a fetish for guns, can we change the subject? It's either that or you are writing a thesis. Reply Robert, Sarasota 5/3/07 re: Alanna Mitchell quote I am neither for nor against Gun Control as I do not have a true understanding of the problem or subject. While guns protect us against crime (though that has been proven incorrect as most are killed by their own weapon) and fascist Governments (though in America I can't see that happening) do they really act as a safeguard against the reason for having them. We killed off the Indians with guns to grab their land. Likewise, we killed off the Mexicans to grab their land - I really do not understand the argument for or against the right to bear arms, all I know is that they do a lot of killing. I do not believe the human race is ready to give up protecting itself with guns; perhaps one day that may change but not today. If a million Americans were killed by some cataclysmic event we would demand immediate answers and heads would roll but because it happens in the one's and two's (usually) we think nothing it. 3000 get killed on 911 and we invade another country - since 1933 it is estimated that 1.5 million Americans have been killed with firearms more than have died on the battlefield this century - perhaps I shouldn't have noticed... 1 Reply Robert, Sarasota 5/1/07 re: John Trenchard quote Yes, sadly true...
