Napoleon BonaparteNapoleon Bonaparte, (1769-1821) French emperor

Napoleon Bonaparte Quote

“I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of people would die for Him.”

From a man who could inspire devotion. Truth and humility.

Terry Berg, Occidental, CA

The musings of a little man hellbent on the recognition which immortality might provide. He was neither truthful nor humble - THAT really IS a concept.

Tatiana, Loudoun County, VA, USA

I agree with the man. Even though he kinda was a bit crazy and maybe too ambitious for his own good, this is just AMAZING. JUST AMAZING.

If only more of God's people were today as they were in Napoleon's day our world would be a much better place... It's a shame that so many have become so faithless and spineless. Regardless of what kind of man Napoleon was, he knew and understood the reality of Christ and the devotion of His followers.

Most of those that founded Empires exalted themselves as gods. Their accomplishments were violently brutal; driven by greed and thirst for power. Emperor Napoleon's quote came when he was exiled on the rock of St. Helena; he was heartbroken. Decades before he had declared, " I do not believe that such a person as JESUS CHRIST ever existed; but as the people are inclined to superstition, it is proper not to oppose them." But now, he was ready to open his heart to the ONE that alone founded His Everlasting Empire upon Love. It is very likely that this wretched emperor became my brother in CHRIST JESUS.

True. Jesus rocks. Though I wouldn't call Napoleon a genius.

    James, Medford

If only he would have applied this thought to his rule, nevertheless, I hope he repented before he passed on...He was a great man in history and I hope I could meet him if its Christs will.

Men that create empires with force are doing so for their own benefit (riches, place in history, land mass they annex). Jesus formed his empire/following by showing love for his fellow man/woman through actions, speeches and hope that those following him (12 apostles) would be able to tell his message. Great quote.

Napoleon at last recognized what far too many fail to do today in realizing the majestic power and grace that Jesus Christ brought to the people of this earth as the Son of God. In naming several of the great conquerors of ages past, he points out the undeniable fact that all of their achievments together could not replicate those of our Messiah. Even more profoundly, he recognized that Jesus worked the miracle of converting the human heart, not with force, but rather love and compassion! We all would do well to ponder the implications of these words of a man who subjected millions by force of arms and came to such a wretched end.

In his last hours, Napoleon could still understand and acknowledge the profound effect that Jesus had on humanity. The He could found a kingdom, empire and domain based on love. Napoleon may have been a tyrant and a strategic military man...but he was just a man.
