Franklin D. Roosevelt Quote

“The creed of our democracy is that liberty is acquired and kept by men and women who are strong and self-reliant, and possessed of such wisdom as God gives mankind -- men and women who are just, and understanding, and generous to others -- men and women who are capable of disciplining themselves. For they are the rulers and they must rule themselves.”

Good quote, but the USA is a republic, not a democracy. Also, FDR was a socialist asshole.

This sentiment was common among liberals at the time.  I'd like to know the context since FDR's actions certainly did not reflect this statement.

A case in point of: "do as I say, not as I do". Roosevelt, may be next to Wilson in destroying Constitutional law and prosperity. Here Roosevelt speaks a natural law accuracy - hiding the socialist behind the mask. Five stars for accuracy of the statement.
