I believe we are obligated to cover both ends of the spectrum to achieve a moral existence. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 11/6/12 I go along with J on this one. Reply Mike, Norwalk 11/6/12 Socrates is here making a distinction between the shallow, the facade, the form, etc. and that which is eternally substantive. A great example of this would be current world politics (U.S.A. leading the way). That rates far more than 5 stars. What is lacking in the thought is the harmony of the 2 (the form to the substance). As J so accurately points out, that gets a thumb's down. Reply E Archer, NYC 11/6/12 I don't read into this quote that Socrates is saying that one excludes the other. What he is saying is aren't you ashamed that you spent all your energy in putting up an act while ignoring the substance. A dogmatist may indeed spend their life living according to their religion's dictates all the while ignoring the most important part of life. SaveOk2 SaveOk2 View CommentsClick to view or comment.
