Usually, I'm a giant Sowell fan but, he missed the mark here. The "laws of nature and of nature's God", liberty, inalienable rights are inherent in/to the individual, not an abstract group think or "society". Constraints by physical persuasion, palpable inducement (as perpetrated by the collective), force, et cetera defines forms of slavery, not freedom. The degree of freedom that is possible is measured by liberty's expression of the laws of nature and of nature's God.

Three key Liberties, Economic, Physical, Spiritual, like fire, if one element is taken away, the fire will go out to a measured degree. The spiritual liberty (fire) maintained through faith, given it is the access to our Creator, assures the rekindling of our sacred Liberty and Freedom to defend.
