Singer's correct; no excuses -- compulsion ? mandate ? There ain't no such thing and history includes the names of those who decided there was no choice -- and died for the freedom to choose to do so. Maybe if we add the word "other" ( no OTHER choice ) Mike would be happier. Reply Bob, Ferrisburgh 5/21/15 re: American Civil Liberties Union quote WHA' !!??!! The ACLU in favor of liberty ? Well, I suppose ( but do not KNOW ) that most / all of us can find an item we champion as being a part of liberty -- or freedom. The catch, in my not totally educated eye, is the degree to which liberty and freedom can become license. Don't most of us agree that democracy without some constraints becomes lawless and chaotic nonsense? Maybe the conjunction of 'democracy' with 'republic' ( democratic republic ) takes the too sharp edge off the freedom of rabble-rousers. Guess I need more thinking. Reply Bob, Ferrisburgh 5/19/15 re: Henrik Ibsen quote Nice philosophical goal, but the "ought to" is being ignored: we need more appreciation for a sound education so as to "be prepared" to set and maintain a straight course as "everyone" pilots our ship of state Reply Bob, Ferrisburgh 5/15/15 re: John Stuart Mill quote THAT'S what I've been trying, in my own inept way, to tell folks with whom I argue. Thank you, Mr. Mill !! SaveOk2 Share on Facebook Tweet Email Print
