Secession was legal, read the 10th Amendment. It only became illegal in 1869 when all the self-appointed Yankee trash attempted to justify the slaughter over a "moral" issue which never existed during the war. The "Emancipation Proclamation" came 3 years into the war and freed no one, only Blacks "in Rebel-controlled areas." If you were a slave in Maryland, Kentucky, even Delaware, you were still a slave. It was a war measure. What good did it do? Blacks had a horrible record fighting for the North, as your boy Lincoln noted himself.
