Stone quote Forget "natural law" for a minute and let's discuss man made laws passed by the the lovely people in government, local ,state, and federal. Many are for our good, some are just stupid and some are just plain wrong. Asset forfeiture laws are a great example of laws that are wrong. When cops can take private property when no crime was committed, or even if a crime is committed, something is sorely wrong. Many small town police departments are financed with property stolen in this manner. Congress passed these laws and can and should repeal them. All this mischief done on the basis of this horrible so-called war on drugs. 2 Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/14/10 re: Lysander Spooner quote Inspite of how a judge charges a jury, a jury can have a not guilty verdict if they think the law is unjust, or for any reason for that matter. Since we now have about a zillion laws, many that are just plain wrong, we need to use jury nullification more than ever. No judge will ever mention jury nullification to any jury even if the judge is aware of it. Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/9/10 re: Niccolo Machiavelli quote As George Washington said, "Government is not reason, it is force. Like fire it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master". 2 Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/8/10 re: Henry George quote Reston, what is "foolish" and "downright dangerous" is governments restrictive gun laws. The A.T.F., Alcohol ,Tobacco and Firearms should be a convenience store , not a government agency. Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/8/10 re: Cato quote My drug of choice is caffeine, as in coffee. Cigarettes and liquor are legal and sold everywhere but God help you if you get caught with marijuana which is not nearly as harmful. The congress knows that this War on Drugs does more harm than good but none have the guts to say so. Thank you. 1 Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/3/10 re: John Adams quote If you don't have a way to protect yourself in your home, you are making a mistake. You may have one of those security services with an alarm ,but they still have to call the cops and you have to wait for them to arrive. Of course , you can always visit with the burglar while you wait. Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/3/10 re: John Adams quote Some say we should leave it to the cops for our safety. If you think that the cops can protect you, think again. After you are robbed and killed in your home, they will make a report and that's about it. They may even catch the culprit but you are still dead. It's up to us to protect ourselves. 1 Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/3/10 re: Jacob G. Hornberger quote If he ever runs for president he gets my vote. This quote nails it. 2 Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/2/10 re: Doug Bandow quote You had to know that Anonymous and Waffler wouldn't understand anything about economics. When the minimum wage is increased thousands of entry level jobs that teens need simply disappear. If you need a minimum wage , why hell, let's make it 50 dollars an hour. Of course business couldn't pay it and no one would have a job but what the heck. 1 Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/1/10 re: Harlan F. Stone quote The term is "Jury Nullification" and no judge is ever going to mention this to a jury. I doubt that half the lawyers in the country have ever heard of it. I had to explain this to a top lawyer friend in Ohio who had no idea what it was. I guess they overlooked it in law school. Jury nullification is about the last chance a citizen has to nullify a bad law unless the law is stricken from the books. Reply jim k, Austin,Tx 9/1/10 re: George Sutherland quote If a juror doesn't think a law is fair,he can vote not guilty regardless of the judges instructions.
