Gandhi quote To the Dead, it makes no difference. To Orphans and the Homeless, when mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism, the difference is that their situation may be getting even worse, and may cause their deaths. To Orphans and the Homeless, the efforts expended by others in "the holy name of liberty and democracy", though destructive, may very well be understood as part of the price that must be expended to purchase freedom and liberty. Sadly, Freedom is Not Free. Gandi was an exceptional and enlightened person; however he not struggling against mass murderers, poison gas, or terrorists. His non-violent activities assisted his countrymen in throwing off the oppression of England's colonialism. The English were a civilized democratic nation who understood the sanctity of life. Even the most naive will recognize that non-violence is ineffective in dealing with uncivilized terrorists who are willing to kill indiscriminately to further their cause.
