If there were no White House for example (no president) then we never have to worry about having a bad one. 1 Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/27/08 re: Gaius Julius Caesar quote If it supports they world view and fulfills their basic needs whether it is true or not. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/27/08 re: Frank Lloyd Wright quote Warren you get a kudos for actually watching something and especially someone who you previously vehemently criticised. Not that it changed your mind but at least now you can be a fairer critic. The difference is that we all bring previous views to people which colors our thought processes. I think Gore is sincere, you see him as wanting to be a star. He has been talking about this stuff since at least 1988 almost 20 years. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/26/08 re: H. L. Mencken quote Warren yes. You may not understand the connection but I have heard some compared their own individuality juxtaposed against the mass of men. All individuals are part of the mass of men including you and I. I apologize that my ability to express myself is inadequate but the belief that the self is not part of the mass of humanity is a fraudulent position in my view. Since every individual is in possession of the self, and the self may think of itself as not part of the mass of humanity, so the world becomes 6 billion selves individually looking at the other 5.9 other billion selves and calling them the masses of which I am not a part. This is the root cause of the "Me versus they" form of thinking which I think is a fraudulent or erroneous way of thinking. Sorry that I have digressed so badly, I think I need another beer. Mencken quote It is fraudulent to say others are part of the masses but that you are not. The masses are just individuals at large whom you have not met yet. And you are a faceless member of the mass of men others have not met yet. To aver that you are not a member of the mass is a lie or fraud. He is being funny and cute here but not very thoughtful or true. 3Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/26/08 re: Helen Keller quote She is right that S^%$ happens but if you take her literally then I guess we should just throw away are guns and quit trying to be more secure. 2Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/26/08 re: Clarence S. Darrow quote Funny, Kind Mr. Logan did not comment on the other quotes in this listing. Just the one in which I mentioned his pet mantra "republic not a democracy". Seems to prove my point that he is a one issue Manchuerian pit bull that is pre-programmed to salivate almost upon command but is not free to intellectually comment on anything else. Damn shame it is, a damn shame, that on a site dedicated to Liberty some people are so locked up in mental chains and appear to do what they are bidden to do by who knows whom. And these mentally chained up people run in a crowd and hang together, damn shame! At least Mr. Archer admits that he is simply anti-Washington, anti-masses (which of course he is part and parcel of just like the rest of us) and is shallow enough to believe that the word Democracy refers to the Democrat Party which it does not or that it simply means a two party system which it does not. He also has stated that he and his friends whom ever they are are going to take over the politcal world by changing the vocabulary. Manchurians is the best word I can come up with for them. While we are a large continental nation we are still diverse. I have not traveled much but have been to Mexico and Hungary. If you want to see conformity go to some of these places. To the extent that we do conform it is because we want to. Human behaviour gravitates toward the "normative", advertising convinces many to buy things and do things in the same way. You are still free to grow, cook, bake your own food, and to make your own clothing etc. We are not forced into any conformity by government but only by our friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Those who feel locked into conformity are probably just bored with their own life or existence. It is more of a psychological condition than a true political or social condition. Genius is never genius until is recognized by the majority. Often would be genius is ostracized as odd ball or crazy, if it never makes iteself into the main stream it is never genius. Their is often a learning curve before sufficient folk recognize the new discovery, talent, or invention only then is the thing given the title genius. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/25/08 re: Eric Hoffer quote There was a recent news report of a man in Kentucky who shot up a Unitarian Church because he said he hates liberals. 4Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/25/08 re: Clarence S. Darrow quote People whose thoughts are locked into sloganeering like "compelled compliance, vitimeless crimes" or "republic not a democracy" do not themselves have intellectual freedom or liberty but are controlled by an agenda not unlike one party dictatorial regimes. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/25/08 re: Percy Bysshe Shelley quote God Bless America, probably the least comformed and obedient place on earth. We struggle with the non-conformists among us, peoples of all faiths, cultures etceterta. The tendency for conformity is obviously world wide otherwise why is the Middle East Muslim, and Tibet Buddhist etcetera. America with its Constitutional Guarantees and occasional tolerance is really a unique and revolutionary society. Maybe the highest American ideal is God like in that we accept people or sometimes aspire to accept people just as they are. 1 Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/25/08 re: Eric Hoffer quote This is very insightful. Goes beyond politics. Where freedom and equaltity and economic abundance exists life can be easy and pleasant for everyone, the masses. Think of a Tahiti for example or a populated Garden of Eden. But something sometimes enters into human nature (some may call it sin) to want to be "better" or controlling or to have more than others. An elitism to be free and different than everyone else just for the sake of being different and to perceive self as greater or better than others. It is a delusion to think that you are not part of the masses. I would dare say that everyone of us think that, thus maybe we are all deluded. If that is true then every member of the mass of people think they are not a member of the mass of people. It is kind of stupid to think that way is it not? This method of thinking is the same old "We versus They" mentality. I got news for you We are They. 3Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/25/08 re: Clarence S. Darrow quote LOL Mike. The French and other middle aged types could not know her so they built statutes in order to personify her. Mike from Norwalk obviously does not know her because he is locked into some kind of Manchurian chant as can be seen from his oft repeated and boring mantra about victimless crime etc. and his view that America has to many opinions, together with his opposition or dislike for majority rule. Just the opposite of love for liberty. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/22/08 re: George Orwell quote Incuding telling lies and scandals etcetera. We as individuals must sort out the truth from the lies ourselves. Europeans have told me they are shocked about American advertising, for example, when a car dealer says something like "We are the best Ford dealer in America". In America we call that puffing or being a blowhard and it is legal. In Europe they tell me such practices are either frowned on or are illegal. In America we usually think "yeah right man, prove it" but they are still allowed their puffing, bragging or even lying. The biggest lie in America is "professional" wrestling. If they called it a show, a play or drama it would be truthful but they call it a fight and it is thus the biggest lie in America. Newton's apple falling from a tree is the seemngly simplest , stupidest discovery of all time but it is a GREAT TRUTH. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/21/08 re: Patrick Henry quote Five stars to A. I communicate now through karaoke. "Anything can happen in a song." A song conveys poetry and meaning and sometimes with the right person it may even be melodic. Melody is an ineffable form of meaning. 1Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/21/08 re: Frank Lloyd Wright quote If CO2 is not pollution just go into a small bank vault or put a bag over your head and breathe your own breath for a few hours and then see how blue you are. Now interpolate your findings into larger and larger situations. Archer as usual you contradict yourself. If CO2 is not pollution then why do we need to plant trees. Trees soak up CO2 and give off O. You say that a problem does not exist and then you say how we should fix this now existent problem. My, my, my you worry me boy! Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/21/08 re: Clarence Thomas quote She wasn't a teenager, was she? I think the first thing I do when I get the to the White House is I am going to get laid in the Oval Office, I think that is so sexy. 1Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/21/08 re: Patrick Henry quote The individual can really only know the truth of his immediate surrondings. But today via media technology our immediate surrondings have become the entire planet. This Founding Father was prophetic concerning the environmental issues of our time. 3 Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/21/08 re: Gerry Spence quote It has been said that "teachers teach what they want to learn" and maybe we also argue what we want to understand better. Correct, respectful argumentation sharpens us. I believe the bible coments on how personal contact between individuals sharpens and creates "better'" individuals sort of like you inferred yesterday Reston, without common vocabulary and argument we are just cave men. This logic then makes lawyers the most civilized among us, so heaven help us. Spence was always a little wordy so I give him a 3, but I loved his brown suede jacket and smooth north woods persona so make it 4. 2 Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 8/21/08 re: Anne Louise Germaine de Stael quote The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth which finally equals awareness.
