Supposedly, Khrushchev made this statement to a secret Party meeting in 1959. In reality however it was fabricated by radical right elements within the U.S. and then widely circulated by right-wing politicians and organizations. The Library of Congress, the CIA, J. Edgar Hoover, Sen. James Eastland (Senate Internal Security Subcommittee) and Cong. Francis Walter (House Committee on Un-American Activities) were all unable to verify it. See Congressional Record, 3/8/62, p3676 (2) "You Americans are so gullible. No you won't accept Communism outright, but we'll keep feeding you small doses of socialism until you'll finally wake up and find you already have Communism. We won't have to fight you. We'll so weaken your economy until you'll fall like an overripe fruit into our hands." Also a fake quote circulated in ill-informed anti-communist circles. (See same entry in Congressional Record cited above; also see Paul F. Boller Jr., and John George: They Never Said It: A Book of Fake Quotes, Misquotes and Misleading Attributions, Oxford University Press, 1989, page 59.
