I don't know of any government that cares what the individual(s) (individually or in concert) wants.

Peace.Ahhh....yes.For a few years, maybe but the driving engine of THIS Democracy is War. True Peace will not come until the economic engine of this democracy runs on another fuel.... besides War. HNY.'07.

Dick, Fort Worth

Ah, if only all people didn't want war. But war is exactly what people like Cheney and corporate crooks across the globe want. And they know just as Goehring knew, the way to war is to wave a flag, build fear and cry patriotism.

Anonymous, Reston, VA US

Well said Dick, though I think you must include the radical religious right (of any and all religions) in that statement.

Eisenhower, a real combat veteran, could have been talking about today's administration, without a day of military service among them, taking the country into a totally useless war, no matter how much the people wanted peace.

Robert, Los Angeles

Lest anyone has forgotten, it was Eisenhower who first said "Peace through Strength" in 1952. But an even wiser man said: "Beware, lest in your anxiety to avoid war, you obtain a master." -- Demosthenes (384-322 BC)

Jack/OH is right on.

I give it a three, because of merits and given the fact that if it didn't come from the scum bag mouth of the creator big brother's most deviant friend, the NSA. If it was from someone like HHH or Patrick Buchanan (mostly pre-2001 even know he's shown to have been that same on that lonely island.) or a Byfield (Ted/Link), Sobran perhaps. Voltare, or even Franklin, Herbert, John, John Q, and Sam or Abigail Adam(s) I think it would have a 5.

If government got out of the way, we would already have peace.

Robert, Los Angeles

Then get rid of government and see how long you have peace. In fact, government's only job is supposed to protect us from harm. I'm not sure what your idea of peace is, but being decapitated by vicious terrorists is not a very peaceful thought.

Alison Margaret Williams, London

What's the source of the quote? When and where did Eisenhower say it?
