A penetrating perspective of the frailities of human nature. After seeing the light, a legal scholar of antiquity wrote: "I have discovered this principle of life---that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong...Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?"

And perhaps one of our follies is the conviction that we have inalienable rights. Who decides what is inalienable, or even, what are our "rights"?

The only true inalienable right is to make a fool of yourself. No one can stop us from doing that!

They aren't supposed to shield us from anything but a rapacious government.

What can we do when a person freely chooses to sign away his/her rights? Ultimately our freedom is defended by individuals when we refuse to indenture ourselves for benefits and privileges offered by the ruling class.
