Gilbert Keith ChestertonGilbert Keith Chesterton, (1874-1936) British essayist, critic, poet, and novelist

Gilbert Keith Chesterton Quote

“This is the perpetual and pitiful tragedy of the practical man in practical affairs. He always begins with a flourish of contempt for what he calls theorizing and what people who can do it call thinking. He will not wait for logic--that is, in the most exact sense, he will not listen to reason. It will therefore appear to him an idle and ineffectual proceeding to say that there is a reason for his present failure. Nevertheless, it may be well to say it, and to try and make it clear even to him.”

Jack, Brussels (Belgium) - but I'm British !

There was no 29 February in 1925 ...

Waffler, Smith

Some fail to recognize or admit that there are authorities or authoritative persons in many aspects of public life, be it in health care, military, schooling etcetera. Just as a simpistic approach does not work with modern autos and mechanics neither does it work with most public institutions and issues.

Mike, Norwalk

Waffler, didn't you say you were a practical man? And, fyi, the most simplistic approach to modern autos and mechanics is still the most effective and, it gives the best results. Reason, logic, thinking, theorizing, practicality, and procedures are all but a part in recognizing what law is and, what its applications are.

J Carlton, Calgary

Waffler is right again. A simplistic approach does not work. If you want to confuse and control people you must make everything as complicated and convoluted as you possibly can. God forbid everyday people might figure out they are being robbed blind.

jim k, austin

People are beginning to "figure out that they are being robbed blind". Millions are attending Tea Parties throughout America. Let's hope it isn't too late.

Life is really pretty simple when you filter through all the flak out there to cover up the simplicity of it. I agree with you Jim K.
