Pierre Trudeau Quote

“Obviously, the state's responsibility should be to legislate rules for a well-ordered society. It has no right or duty to creep into the bedrooms of the nation.”

Tom Osborne, Tarzana

I'm not sure we can even trust the state on the first part, especially because of what they want to do on the second part.

J Carlton, Calgary

About the only decent thing this neo-communist ever said or did. 5 stars as a stand alone quote.

J Carlton, Calgary

PS - Trudeau never did give his definition of "well ordered". But he did implement massive wealth redistribution...which is one of the 10 planks of the communist manifesto.

Mike, Norwalk

J Carlton, well said, I agree. Not shooting the messenger, an absolute stand alone, on its face, correct statement.

jim k, Austin, Tx

I agree with J, Mike, and Tom.

Waffler, Smith

He is correct about what the state, society, and politics should be all about. How we relate to each other outside of the home and on the "street" etc. It is not about religious belief, creationism, etcetera. We don't need a politics that lies about scientific facts.

J Carlton, Calgary

Absolutely Right Waffler....which is why the Rev. Al Gore should be imprisined for profiteering built on the false premise that is "Man Made Global warming"

Mike, Norwalk

Waffler ? ? What scientific facts is Trudeau lying about here ? Is there a scientific definition to creeping or, bedroom that I'm not aware of ? Are you speaking of a government's weaving together certain select facts mixed with desired propaganda to come up with a false conclusion ? (Maybe like how a commercial jet liner can pass through the eye of a needle on the side of the Pentagon and leave no trace of a plane ? hey, there is a purported mile high club - wheuuu, is that far enough off topic for you Waffler?)

L. Hanson, Edmonton, Canada

J, get over it. He's still recognized world-wide as the greatest Prime Minister this country every had.

J Carlton, Calgary

L Hanson, there's nothing to get over...and your hero always was a communist. Much like yourself I imagine..Parasites!

J Carlton, Calgary

And just for fun..."Anyway, the so-called "new image" derives from Young Trudeau: 1919-1944 by Max and Monique Nemni, who reveal that as a young man Trudeau had fascist sympathies, was prone to the routine anti-Semitism of mid-century Quebec francophones, blamed Britain for the Second World War, and spent it riding around Montreal wearing a German helmet." (http://moneyrunner.blogspot.com/2006/06/mark-steyn-on-pierre-trudeau-young.html) ...A real Canadian Hero? I don't think so!

Anonymous, Reston, VA, US

The radical right in the US lies daily about science... such as claiming that we are not undergoing human generated climatic change... I suspect this is what Waffler was noting here.

J Carlton, Calgary

Reston, I see you've bought into the lie that is the IPCC and Al Gore's personal money making machine...pathetic. Ever wonder why the very few actual Climatologists involved with the IPCC wanted their names taken off the the IPCC's final report? Because it had been altered to suit the agenda of the UN and a few profiteers, that's why...do some homework.

E Archer, NYC

I take offense to the first sentence, but agree wholeheartedly with the second. Keeping in mind that Canada is a monarchy, the government does indeed legislate rules for the nation -- but there is SUPPOSED to be a difference between a monarchical form of government and a republican form of government. Defining 'rules' and 'a well-ordered society' is up for grabs as far as politics goes. Making up 'laws' we must 'obey' is the actual work of government.

Waffler, Smith

Mike, I set the topic, you just act in a knee jerk fashion, get it!
