Kathy, you're right that it's a great quote, but he's not celebrating the religious right. He's pointing out their hypocrisy. You're obviously viewing the sentiment through a warped prism.

Tolerance is the consequence of humanity. The rest quickly becomes convoluted.

Very timely, with the recent political activity of the Evangelical Christians.

The Civil War was not about slavery, rather about the south's right to suceed from the union. As to the end of the quote, more government results in less liberty.

If you think this is bad. Then you must be Benidict Arnold, Adolf hitler, and Osama Bin-Ladan

I don't see how welfare has anything to do with this quote. War is far far uglier than anything on this planet - and it affects a far range of people, from the soldier to the citizen. Please take your false musings about welfare to an appropriate forum. As for freedom, everybody is entitled to it. Read the Declaration of Independence. You are BORN with rights that cannot be taken away - you don't have to "earn" them. The point of an standing army is to defend our interests in the world. You have NATURAL rights no matter WHAT is happening in the world. Besides, wasn't it JSM that said most conservatives are idiots?

William was at least a thoughtful politician, unlike the current administration. Both liked mary jane however.

Wouldn't it be great if the "religious right" took this quote to heart? Oh wait, that would pretty much wipe out the whole basis of the Republican party.

Only somebody with their head buried in the sand would admit that slavery had nothing to do with the Civil War. This quote does not prove anything about Lincoln, unless you ignore pretty much everything else he said. The Civil War wasn't about "Southern independence." The South were traitors, period. Traitors to the union, traitors to the Constitution.

Oh please, Lincoln destroyed the USA? No, he RESTORED the USA to the principles it had been founded on.

One word to describe the South during the Civil War: traitors. The South fought for the right to keep slaves - gee, how noble of them. I admire Mencken, but he is dead wrong here.
