My instinct tells me that there are more than one species of homo sapiens inhabiting the planet at this time in our evolutionary development--those for whom this quote is true and those who have mentally and spiritually evolved past this primal stage of man as animal and have arrived at a place where the heart's dominant passion is compassion for others and not the will to oppress. I think last week's discourse about guns, and the complete disconnect between people not sharing the same POV, clearly showed this distinction exists.

For people who are strict about interpreting the constitution true to its original intent, and usually people in the NRA camp are in that group, gun liberalization is one area in which they contradict themselves. As Anonymous points out the right to bear arms for the founders had everything to do with the goverments ability to call up a militia and nothing to do with arming the populace up the wazoo with guns of mass destruction to be used on their fellow citizens at their discretion, provked or not. That slaves were left out of the equation also points to the fact that we make progress in interpreting constituional law as history as evolved to teach us more about human justice.

Not all laws of nature are as morally eveolved as are the laws that man instigates. The innate power of the strong in nature to overpower and subjugate the weak is the umbrella rule of the jungle that a civilized society works to overcome by judiciously creating laws that protect against oppression, discrimination, unjust war and man's general inhumanity to man..not to mention what laws are needed to protect even Nature from man's greed and destructive tendencies. Human social order is the beginning of rising above the rawness of nature's violence, not merely a structured means of codifying nature.

"All the authorities have to do nowadays is claim that a case is linked to terror and they can get away with just about anything. The rule of law is succumbing to the tyranny of fear." Bob Herbert, Today's New York Times Editorial
