I wish they had left that "General Welfare" part out. Liberals have used it as an excuse for all of this welfare that has put us all in debt.

Eloise, since you live in the tree hugger capital of the world, we need to cut you some slack. FDR's policies to get us out of the depression only made matters worse. Then along came the bombing of Pearl Harbor and everyone went to work making planes, bombs, vehicles, guns, and all sorts of items to fight the war. This pulled FDR's chestnuts out of the fire and everyone forgot all about the depression and got behind the war effort. And get a laugh out of this, when FDR ran against Hoover, he said that Hoover was a big spender and this had to stop. LoL.

T.C. Andrews Jr., summed it up. The country has headed downhill ever since 1913 when we got the 16th amendment and the Fed. It got a major downhill boost by FDR's New Deal.

Two George Orwell quotes: "In our age there is no such thing as keeping out of politics. All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred, and schizophrenia". " Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give and appearance of solidity to pure wind".

Waffler, please borrow a dictionary and look up "subsidies". If you can't look it up, get someone to help you and read it to you.

Warren, a small bumper sticker at that.

It's a real shame that Jefferson didn't have Reston around to advise him. Reston and Waffler are SO much smarter than Mr. Jefferson.

Reston and Waffler, don't be late to the Party meeting on Friday, those commies get cranky when you miss a session.

Great comment, J Carlton.

"Government is a disease masquerading as it's own cure". L. Neal Smith.

A perfect description of government. There is no such thing as "good government", just some less abusive and oppressive than others. Like comparing a minimum security prison to a maximum security prison.

I was a longtime fundamentalist until I woke up.

Lanya Jan Wilson, what on earth does the term 'God's Holy Word" even mean. That God somehow wrote or dictated the Bible ? If he did , then someone should have told him or the various writers that the world is round . The Bible was written by a lot of primitive people who thought that epilepsy was demon possession . You say it's historical accuracy is being confirmed daily, then you must be reading different scientists than I read. Check out Neal Degrasee Tyson on YouTube and you may get another idea. I doubt that you will since Bible thumpers like you are more interested in believing than questioning or thinking.

Taylor Hoynes, I'd be careful with that Thomas Jefferson Quote you used. Jefferson was a Deist and did not believe in the virgin birth, the resurrection, and despised the teaching of the trinity. Proverbs 14:15 could read, "The simple believes every word in the Bible, but a wise man considers a matter".

It's a sure bet that mister Quincy lived before 1913 when we got the 16th amendment and the Federal Reserve. Or possibly before A. Lincoln declared war on the South in order to centralize all government power in Washington DC.

You can bet that this guy was a member of the English upper crust.

A visible hand of caring and humane politicians is a contradiction in terms. It should read a visible bunch of politicians whose objective is to enrich themselves by stealing from the people and to get reelected and stay in office forever.

Please excuse my cynicism , but the word "good" and "government" don't belong in the same sentence. There is no such thing as good government, just some that are slightly less oppressive than others. Like a minimum security prison and a maximum security prison. To quote L. Neal. Smith, "Government is a disease masquerading as it's own cure".

As to this part, "Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith". Morality doesn't need faith if he means faith in a supreme being or something else. Faith is belief in something without evidence to support that belief.

I don't have enough information to rate this.

Mike, Christian is a generic term meaning different things to different people. Some benighted souls think that you have to accept belief in the virgin birth, miracles, Jesus dying for sin the resurrection and so on or you are headed for hell and you aren't a Christian. It's going to be mighty lonesome "up there" for these saints.

E Archer, Every common symbol actually came from Pagan origins, including those of Christmas and Easter.

From a Deist, not a Christian.
