There must be protection for the minorities and that must be sacrosanct - hence the Founders need to separate church and state. 5 Reply RBESRQ 7/8/09 re: H. L. Mencken quote Well, at least we agree on this one; well, nearly. Perfect! The most dangerous institution for any government is education and that is why we are in such a mess; both from a freethinking point of view and ability to question authority. The dumber we are the more easily lead - just look at the list of books the religious extremists are trying to ban from schools and that will tell the picture. Reply RBESRQ 7/8/09 re: Henry David Thoreau quote The only true law is SELF unto no other law shall I submit. Reply RBESRQ 7/8/09 re: Henry David Thoreau quote Beautiful! How can you be so blind. It is Law that inhibits man. A society based on love and trust needs no law. Only a society that is corrupt needs law and shackles those that don't. Reply RBESRQ 6/27/09 re: William Howard Taft quote Carlton - thanks, you just confirmed what I said. There is no such thing as basic American values. And that my dear friend is the beginning of nationalism which is the beginning of tyranny. We must stop always using religion and nationalism as props for our own behavior - as if those two things know the answers - they don't; all they have done is create harm, bloodshed, misery and put a Sprag in the way of science and progress. Reply RBESRQ 6/26/09 re: William Howard Taft quote Dont worry Jugs, liberals will be there to mend their wounds. Reply RBESRQ 6/26/09 re: William Howard Taft quote Jugs, I'm with you - they also watch Fox news - sorry I'm being rude. Reply RBESRQ 6/26/09 re: William Howard Taft quote P.s Jim you too are being rude. Reply RBESRQ 6/26/09 re: William Howard Taft quote Peter, try not to be rude and just state your case/argument. Though I do agree the statement is silly because it totally lacks reality. Please tell me what is meant by the right of property - what right is he talking about - we have no rights to property today or yesterday. If the government wants it they will take it, one way or another. The biggest fallacy of all time is this thinking that we have sovereignty over our property. Editor, I don know what it is but you are coming up with quotes that addle the mind and lack imagination. Also it seems you are stuck on the past instead of working to improve the future. Its imagination we need not knowledge. Reply RBESRQ 6/26/09 re: Walter Lippmann quote Interesting! is atheism a concept? Reston, I don't know why you gave a thumbs down - the statement is very clear to the positive. Though I would like to read what lead up to the ...Bill of Rights.... By the way, Jesus was killed like thousands before and after him by religious far right and the mediocrity of Rome - though I do agree I think he was a good man. Reply RBESRQ 6/25/09 re: William E. Gladstone quote Yes, we seem to be getting closer to these prophetic words. Waffler, I agree, but there is currently a program for kids - I think if your income is less than a percentage of the poverty level. I think the program is called Healthy Kids. I wrote a long letter to the AMA and Obama with my idea for a universal health plan - who knows I may be asked to visit DC. The sooner we take this equation away from greedy corporations the better. And please. you bleeding who ever, don't tell me the country will go bankrupt. Did you know that 35% of all procedures carried out are unnecessary and 20 percent of all hospital charges are caused by the hospital, and that 15 percent of all charges to Insurance companies are fraudulent, and that doctors (not all) bill for services not performed - under Medicare you are blacklisted if you are caught? Did you know that many deaths in the US could be avoided if procedures that were needed were not either held up or denied by insurance companies? Did you know the US has one of the worst mortality records in the western world? Its amazing, if you don’t have health insurance a visit to the ER could cost you $5k but if you have insurance the charge would be about $2k So, if you are poor and unable to afford the extortionate insurance premiums you have $5k charge but if you have insurance but had to pay the full amount it would only cost you$2k Now you tell me where the ethics is in this scenario. If we had a controlled system and I have written how that could be possible we could cut our healthcare cost in half while providing health insurance for everyone including illegal aliens. We should revert back to the DRG (Diagnostic Related Groups) system of paying for procedures and let hospitals pay for the infections they cause. Even the system in place to monitor hospitals is corrupt. There is so much wrong with the current system and how providers are reimbursed (a National Injustice) that any change would be an improvement. How about all that money we gave to the banks and that the FR is unable to account for? One of the $7.5 trillion would help. Reply RBESRQ 6/25/09 re: Justice William O. Douglas quote But was it designed to take corporations off the backs of government. Wow! "Super Liberal" what a dirty word; perhaps someone can tell me what in means and while your at it tell me why we didn't impeach or hang Bush's Granddad for treason. It was also designed to protect the minority form the majority and to seperate religion and government, etc, etc, etc. As usual the Supreme court wanting the final word. I'm with Dick one star 1 Reply RBESRQ 6/25/09 re: John Locke quote Try not paying your property taxes and then see who owns property - I'm always reminded when I read stuff like this of the Whistling road sweeper. Good one Bruce. Property is just another shackle, another encumbrance, another debt - in the end its dust to dust. As Peter Hawkien remarked, 'In a millisecond, our body has undergone ten times more processes than there are stars in the universe.' Reply RBESRQ 6/24/09 re: Thomas Jefferson quote I see no compassion in your comments that is my resource, re; this blog anyway. Reply RBESRQ 6/23/09 re: Virginia Declaration of Rights quote Big government is totally useless as is being shown in Obama's "A change you can believe in" he just toes the line of his bosses. Reply RBESRQ 6/23/09 re: Virginia Declaration of Rights quote Mike, you too have no idea what I do and I'm not going to start a tit for tat - lets just say you are wrong in your assumption - And I don't care if Waffler can't match your generosity, I have enough for the two of us. Warren, who do you think tells the government what to do definitely not the government? The pernicious of all government entities are local governments because they don't have the funding big government has. 1Reply RBESRQ 6/23/09 re: Thomas Jefferson quote I can't wait for a Libertarian government one that has no compassion accept for the survival of the fittest -- I wonder how long that would last. I'm not saying the current system is perfect -- it needs intelligent reform not unintelligent alternatives. Oh yes, MRI's, well I suppose if you have 20 machines in Beverly Hills you could get an MRI same day. Do you realize the profit hospitals make on MRI's, no you don't (I was in the healthcare industry for a while it stinks - there are some great doctors - one I know works an urgent care clinic in LA and he is an Angel). Why do you think when you have insurance and you visit the ER you get every test under the sun - grow up guys, you are just fueling the greed that exists in America - you tell them you don't have insurance and bang goes those MRI's and CT's and any other expensive procedure. P.S. the market is heading for an all time collapse so get ready for it. We may need another war to survive. Reply RBESRQ 6/23/09 re: Thomas Henry Huxley quote P.s please provide the scientists name re Czar Nicolas ll DNA/RNA thanks. Reply RBESRQ 6/23/09 re: Thomas Henry Huxley quote Mike, other than Jim's great comments I'm sorry but this needs a much longer conversation. I'm an Atheist and each month I made it a point to meet up with a friend for lunch who is a devote Christian - he is going to seminary college. The reason for the meetings was simple I needed to know why he didn't believe in science over dogma and myth. Science has proved beyond a shadow of doubt that our existence is older than 6000 years. Science has also proved that the human race goes back a very long way though only a short time compared to the life of Earth (when compared to a year we have been around for about 13 seconds to midnight on the 31st of December.) Science has also proved that the Eye is not perfect -- read the 'Blind Watchmaker' and the 747 analogy. Science has also proved that fossils are the age they are, give or take a few thousand years. My question has always been, why did it take so long (that other 364 days eleven hours and 47 seconds) to produce humans. Please don't say it was God's will or his intention so that we would have true faith. The DNA and carbon dating processes have been verified by the vast majority of scientists -- you quote others, please provide their names and I will prove there is hidden agendas. Mike, you say your views and opinions are based on facts -- I find that very hard to believe. There is a mountain of evidence proving the dating of fossils and the existence of humans (Apes). Jim we must band together and provide more verifiable evidence so that Mike doesn't waste any more time with this myth (the biggest hoax in history). The second being Democracy. 2Reply RBESRQ 6/23/09 re: Ammon Hennacy quote Vegeterians live longer... and their footprint is half the size Reply RBESRQ 6/22/09 re: Virginia Declaration of Rights quote Mike, your retort is to black and white. I am not a slave and neither are my friends. Where do you get this kind of understanding? Corporations, the FED, greedy politicians, the banks, corrupt government, campaign financing; these are the elements that have made us slaves to the system, not government. Government is just a tool for those who can manipulate it, for those who can have power provided by corporate America. Government is just a means to govern, its us that cause tyranny and despotism - we put them into government and turn around and say Oh its governments fault and they are the criminals. Let’s all be more responsible for our own actions and those actions to date have been greed and fake security that finances our war machine. Waffler is not saying people should be happy as slave you are - I do not reach that conclusion from his remarks. The conclusion I feel from reading your remarks is that you are uncaring for those who are unable to care for themselves and the roads, hospitals, utilities, schools, should miraculously be provided by local communities and charities - that my dear friend takes us back to feudalism and tribes. Reply RBESRQ 6/22/09 re: U.S. Supreme Court quote How self-serving is that? though the quote is good - I agree, but are those functions to be transferred to the Supreme Court. As they seem to make decisions that they have no right to make. 2Reply RBESRQ 6/22/09 re: Thomas Jefferson quote Well done Waffler, keep the rabble in their place. Though the quote does deserve some credit. I don't think he realized how corrupt government and corporations would become - working together under the guise of our well-being. Many of you have no idea on what you are saying - many governments that already have universal healthcare (care that costs much, much, less that what we provide). The care in America is no more or no less effective that it is in those countries with Universal health care. Though in a recent medical report it showed America has a very bad record when it comes to mortality rates. Please Editor, lets enthuse some intelligent arguments on the subject. The problem with America is that greed and corporate profit far out ways any good intention the bloggers on this site may have. In the meantime those that really do need care because of a myriad of reasons are denied because you Libertarians hate government – give me a break. Until you become more compassionate and understanding of ethics and morality I will not give a damm about your manifesto. Until I see you care for those in need, those who do not have the resources to pay for a roof over their head, an operation, food in the fridge, daycare, and a whole list of other things us rich boys take for granted. The more I read the comments on this blog the more I am disappointed with the human race. We have a long way to go and it seems at times to get further, and further away. I am the eternal optimist so I live in hope that one day the human race (us Apes) will see the light. Capitalism obvious doesn’t work – it has brought the world to its knees, it has damaged our planet to a point it may never recover, it has caused through religious wars and despotism misery beyond imagination. The human race may well be the cause of our own demise. And then after a few thousand years Earth will have forgotten us and hopefully the world will repair itself ready I hope for a more enlightened species. Love you guys – lets all try and help others and this planet. Think when you wake in the morning how fortunate you are and how you can help bring a smile to another’s face. Some will say ‘I’m not going to support the those lazy reprobates or pay for care that they or the community or charity should provide and in some instances you are probably right – that is not the question; the question should be what is honorable and ethical, and do I deny a persons welfare simply because it doesn’t agree with my philosophy or with my agenda.
