I have seen the inner workings of the local television and radio stations as my family worked in those fields when I was younger. Without bad news, it is hard to keep viewers/listeners interested. That is why most 'news' has a component of fear -- it sells. I agree with Mike, 'news' today is to maintain the "statist theocracy's" hold upon the hearts and minds of its subjects.

Sadly this "news commentator" probably got more laughs then Gaucho Marx, yesterday's quoter labeled comedian.
