“Freedom is fragile and must be protected. To sacrifice, even as a temporary measure, is to betray it.”

Shouldn't it be "To sacrifice 'it'"? Though maybe, as an Australian, this how Queen's English would have it? Or maybe, as an idiot American, I don't know what I'm talking about. Note: Although an idiot, I always vote, and I've NEVER voted for a Bush. I agree with the ideas expressed in this quote, as I agree with Benjamin Franklin's sentiments when he wrote, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety,” in 1755. Unfortunately, my representatives in Congress forgot this when they passed the so-called Patriot Act.

'Sacrifice' has become a mantra of the authoritarians whether religious or secular.  It's the word used to excuse every power grab that enriches the ruling elite at the expense of the common people.

Addressing the second sentence. I believe so – ABSOLUTLEY !; to act in a tyrannous, despotic or other anti-natural law manner, betrays “freedom”. Freedom looses its substance and understanding when something other the freedom is called free. By way of example: the occupying statist theocracy infesting this land calls its canons, dogmas, practices and patrons free.
