Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi Quote

“Once one assumes an attitude of intolerance, there is no knowing where it will take one. Intolerance, someone has said, is violence to the intellect and hatred is violence to the heart.”

I can think of a lot of exceptions to this but as a stand alone, I like it.

This should be stapled to the door of every church, synagogue, mosque, and very goverment office.

I agree with you Mike, of Norwalk.

Tolerance is not acceptance -- it is the respect for views one does not share. Coerced acceptance, however, must NOT be tolerated.

It shows the devastation on one's life of hardening our hearts. I needed to hear that. Thanx

To bad Gandhi's appeasing "tolerance" couldn't protect the idiot from being blown to pieces!

Intolerance to what? Out of context this could mean anything. There are many things we need to be intolerant of. Blanket tolerance leads to chaos

In context, this quote makes a lot of sense (Gandhi was talking about tolerating other religions and social groups, etc), and couldn't be more true. On the other hand, out of context it could be terribly misconstrued, at least the "intolerance" part. Also -taken out of context- I can think of a counterexample to Gandhi's claim... what about injustice? Intolerance to injustice is by no means violent to the mind. Also (yeah, I know I say "also" a lot) isn't this a quote within a quote?

@ StanLee: to call a person of Gandhi's stature an 'idiot' clearly shows your lack of respect for a person who till date is an example to people across the globe including many world leaders. This probably comes from a poor upbringing you have had with no values and culture. Secondly, if you had any clue of world history (that's if you ever went to school), you would have known that Gandhi was killed by one of his staunch admirers turned psycho and he wasn't blown to pieces, he was shot 3 times. Finally, the term is 'too bad' not 'to bad', but then you need to go to a formal school to learn the basics. Next time you comment on a world subject, get your facts right to avoid getting rediculed on public space.

I agree with Mike also. And I'll tolerate all of your opinions.
