Wendell L. Willkie Quote

“Freedom is an indivisible word. If we want to enjoy it, and fight for it, we must be prepared to extend it to everyone, whether they are rich or poor, whether they agree with us or not, no matter what their race or the color of their skin.”

~ Wendell L. Willkie

I think this quote is great. It is very true and it really hits you. Not just one man can have freedom, not just one man deserves freedom, you must be willing to fight for it, you must be willing to extend it to your fellow men, you must be willing to stand for the freedom you fought for, don't let another man take it away.

I like this, its a good and very basic thought. And isn't it nice that our government has adhered so well to this philosophy of defending our rights and liberties....no wait, whoops! I mean "securing" our rights. You do feel secure with so many laws...don't you? NOT!

To secure our freedom it often means we have to secure the freedom of people in other countries. History has shown that free countries do not attack other free countries. Tyrants look to destroy freedom around the world to remove tempting examples from the people they wish to control.

We hold theses truths to be self evident.

Usually everyone agrees in principle on this -- however, putting it into practice is another thing. All too frequently, others try to force me to act in accordance to their desires -- often by force and intimidation. We still have a long way to go.

Yes, thank you, Wilkie! (Of course, people in the United States still ridicule others for their beliefs and call them unpatriotic just because they're different... kind of hypocritical).

Good quote, but the folks here in 1940 gave him the heavy thumbs down when he ran for president.

Too bad that Wilkie didn't win against FDR.

Ronw13, Yachats Or

Wilkie was an Internationalist favoring a ( one world government ). On the surface the quote seems very patriotic. He was far left in the Republican party. It is the play on words to muster emotional connection, But another socialist republican. The infiltration of socialism into all branches of government by politicians mouthing the words of patriotism all the while it is far from their heart. I do believe the ( John Birch Society ) would have him nailed down. The ( Old Right ) he is not. His liberalism lost him the supporters in the GOP.

"... WE MUST BE PREPARED TO EXTEND IT TO EVERYONE .." ??
"WE" NEED NOT EXTEND IT -- IT IS -- AND HAS BEEN -- GIVEN BY OUR FOREFATHERS !

Ron13 and BOB - thank you, great clarifications!

Ron, good point. I think it would be better to call these RINOs 'statists' rather than socialist. That is really what the 'establishment' politicians are, statist. Calling them socialist is too generalized -- neither party seems to recognize the policies of fascism they both engender. What needs to happen in both parties is a greater representation of individual rights rather than government solutions. The liberals have a few causes in which they wish to have autonomy over themselves, and so too do the conservatives. All this 'banning' from either side is NOT a power the People have given them, nor to provide for the material needs of the People from the Treasury. The enemy is not the right or the left -- it is pyramidal control from the top to the bottom. As long as the establishment 'rules' the people instead of the people ruling the government, the People become indentured further to empty promises and perpetual debt. The cause of Liberty is the throwing off the yoke of statism for the right to be responsible.
