The problem I have Dougless's quote is 2 fold, 1. He, Lincoln Grant and possibly others held a meeting in white house to discuss the freed Negros future. Lincoln and others thought they should be returned to their birthplace ,Africa.
2. Douglass argued that they should be kept in place and educated. He noted the number of educated Negros and persuaded all to let them stay.

He won the argument but failed to see or realize that the Negro would never integrate into the white man's culture nor lifestyle. Some have but the majority could and will not do so.
