Perhaps it is human nature that ebbs and flows, one generation understands it to a positive affect and another generation does not understand it and makes policies deifying it and suffers the unintended negative effects.

"Educating children should not be a charitable endeavour but one of our and societies top priorities. If this endeavour is given or contracted out to a "private business" it should be watched and monitored very carefully. A private business owes its top priority to enhancing the bottom line and maximizing return on investment to its owners. Not exactly what education is about." -- Waffler

Ah, so a private business owes its priority to the bottom line? So what above all things enhances that bottom-line in a free-market system? SUPERIOR PRODUCT OR SERVICE that's what. The true bosses of any such system is the parents/customer, the customer is not satisfied with that level of superior service they expect they go elsewhere and that affects the bottom-line too! So it is in the private schools best interest to provide a superior education not indoctrination in government dependency propaganda.

That goes double for homeschoolers for they have the most vested personal interest because it is their children. Who would work harder for your child, you or some government employee?
One last thing, the folks commenting here (and you know who you are) that favor a centralized Socialist/communist government I have to wonder just how many years you actually lived under one?

"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master." George Washington

Amen Ken!

Sometimes I wonder if Waffler and his philosophical kin that appear on this site are merely fulfilling the role of provocateur to incite and stimulate philosophical arguments to keep the site interesting and promote a dedicated following?

But then I am mugged by reality as I look around the country and come to the inescapable conclusion that there are really people out there who buy the Waffler type philosophical and worldview crap! Spoonfed through the government indoctrination centers as the downright truth of the label of "useful idiot" is an inescapable fact!

God help us!

Reading and thinking about this quote the 1960s comes to mind with the World War II generation sacrificed for their pampered children squandered and threw away embracing Communistic philosophy and anti-American propaganda designed to deconstruct Western civilization destroy our capitalist free-market system and incrementally move America into communism.

On the subject of "GREED," who wields the measuring instrument of it and what are their biases and agendas, and from where did they derive their opinion, from the holy Scriptures or pop and political culture?

The war on Christianity continues likewise God's plan of the family. A good father sacrifices and works hard for his family but not to the exclusion of the time they need of him and his positive influence.

I have little to fear from a man who is ambitious and desires to gain monetary wealth, but a man who desires political power to influence /control and plunder the lives of every day sovereign freemen and that has not derived his wisdom from a source anchored in natural law concerns me greatly!

I listen to a soundbite of this guy Shanker talking to a pack of howling and hooting teachers about defending common core and his commitment to go after anyone who wants to remove it, saying and I quote
"we will punch you in the face and drag you through the dirt." This man is a true radical and he leads their organization what does that tell you about the rank-and-file?

William on Prozac, you forgot to mention that the American people are the most generous people of any nation on the earth. Whenever there is some kind of natural disaster anywhere on the earth Americans are usually the first ones there to help, we even gave aid to our enemies for crying out loud.

However your statement does have some truth to it, it describes the progressive mindset of the left to a T!

Where in the Constitution does it grant the federal government jurisdiction and the power to provide healthcare to all citizens? The Constitution is a limitation on government power not the people for a very good reason!

Not binding the politicians down with the chains of the constitution is what got us into this mess, it's been a long slow process but we've let it happen and now we're dealing with the out-of-control consequences.

Five stars to the quote for being absolutely true.

As to the previous comments of RBESRQ, Mr. Mann and Mr. Edmonton I would be hard-pressed to add anything more substantive than the defenders of truth, reason, freedom and liberty under natural law have already made here and Gentlemen, you know who you are. But I'll give it a stab!

The American founders created a republic not a pure democracy, the system we were given is not the system we have today likewise with capitalism, for now business has gotten into bed with Government or vice versa and it has corrupted the system. No system is perfect and inmune from corruption because man is fallible that is why our founders utilized natural law with a basic understanding of the human nature flaw under sin.

Not so with the purveyors of socialism/communism for they have swallowed the lies hook line and sinker that the utopian dream of "fairness and equality" is reachable by fallen man through a centralized strong government.

How anyone with a clear eye on history can defend the record of socialism/communism and Marxism that has brought misery and death to hundreds of millions of people is beyond my comprehension that I must conclude that these people have been worked over so hard that they might be deserving of my pity, until I contemplate that people such as these who in the 60s were bombing and killing are now holding the reins of power and are warring against liberty from the inside now for the socialist utopian dream it would seem is like a narcotic that if used eventually destroys the user.

Thank you Mr. Clemens.

It is an absolute truism, read the entire thing from the source
"willing slaves of the welfare state."

Robert, "Communism gets a bad rap?" Gee I wonder if it has anything to do with the suffering and hundreds of millions murdered body count that it brings?

Please give us an example of how communism has brought anyone freedom, justice and prosperity to those that has lived under it. Wasn't it Albert Einstein quote that said " insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome?"

It's amazing the progressive/pro communism mindset that believes that if only they were in control of communism that they could make it work and actually achieve the utopian dream on earth. What madness!

Certainly explains the success of homeschooling.

Mike, Pleasant Hill

This truth is obvious, history demonstrates it.

Why should he very Texas Jim, bomb throwing ultra left wingers aren't required to employ reason.

It's like throwing a mad dog over the fence into someone's backyard barbecue party, the action is the reaction.

Cyndi, Esau traded his birthright for a bowl of his favorite food is much more to the story but I do not believe that Esau actually murdered Jacob because Jacob had children, maybe a good idea to reread.
A lot of good discussion here today.

History demonstrates the fervent desire of statists and tyrants is to indoctrinate the next-generation at the earliest point of their adolescence.
Mike, another demonstration of the superiority of homeschooling over the government indoctrination centers, children to be proud of sir!

Human nature doesn't change Mr. olathe, can you please explain why you consider that sentiment is absurd today? I'm not sure what you mean.

Mike, Pleasant Hill

Agreed, especially considering how easily the people are emotionally and psychologically manipulated through various media to swallow social and political change as the Overton Window consistently moves to the left creating "the moderate paradox" a think piece by Daniel Greenfield, one of the best I've read explaining this. There is also a book entitled "the marketing of evil" that explains the mechanism of this manipulation to the benefit of the statists and big government.
