Great quote! A, Reston is a modern liberal which means a flat out communist. To equate the point of a gun collectivism of Marx which has never worked and never will, to the voluntary communalism of a group of Christians is both absurd and the epitome of hypocrisy for the God hating communist. He is probably a college professor teaching the use of this defective product to our young. Only those insulated in the womb of tenured academia would still quote Marx for some reason other then humor. To summarize A, Reston and Dick are not Americans.

Not Lewis’s best quote. Bear in mind he was voluntary subject, not a citizen. The only legitimate purpose of the state is to keep people from doing violence to each other. D.M. from bozoland or fantasy land? Tell those evil oil companies that give you cheap gas there is no risk to losing multi million and billion dollar oil facilities in the Gulf to hurricanes, North Sea to storms, Africa to terrorists and in Venezuela to confiscation by good little communists like him. I never met a poor person who signed a paycheck. Purchasing stock is the way you voluntarily share the risk and the reward. Corporations do not point a gun to your head and tell you what to do, they give you a choice, unlike the government.

Great quote, Anonymous is a typical liberal fool. Capital Punishment is when society ensures that criminals do not devalue life. Society has a contract with the individual, the cost of a life is a life. It is freedom of choice, once the individual decides to take a life the price must be paid or the bargain hunting begins. I am sure Anonymous is a Democrat, they never saw a tax or tax increase the did not like.

helorat, Milton

Amen brother Ron!!! The income tax is the source of federal social engineering and federal fiat. And direct election of Senators is its greatest aid. The more democratic we become the less free we are. fairtax.org

Suberb quote, but don't expect a democrat to listen, buying votes with someone elses money is their stock in trade. They are no longer an American party. The individual is only supreme over the state only if the individual is supreme over himself, i.e. responsible for himself. Today we are a nation of willing dependents and wards of the state, not its master.

helorat, Milton

Sounds like a description of a Democrat.

Life under Jimmy Carter! And what life under Clinton would have been like without the republican house, and the productivity increase cause by the PC and the internet. Democrats never met a tax they did not like and can't see a tax increase even as they shove it down your throat. And our population has been dumbed down by our socialist public schools they are too ignorant to recognize it and too dependant to want to change it. What the hell does the fed and IMF have to do with our taxes? And inflation is practically non-existent now, like unemployment. If you live in SF, there is your tax and inflation problem, talk about a communist dreamland.

Concur on the Property taxes, but income taxes punish the successful and destroy your privacy by giving the government the right to know everything about you. Sales tax is the best way for revenues to be raised. Income tax was an anathema to the founders as it should be to all Americans. Fairtax.org

helorat, Milton

Amen!! Most certainly as in the IRS and the Congress that wrote their rules that no one can understand.

Great quote, what a pity most Americans are too ignorant to understand it and socialist to appreciate it. It would appear that both Terry and Joe learned economics at the feet of Karl Marx. Sales tax is not a Sumptuary Law. Sales taxes are not designed to limit spending nor does the burden of them fall inequitably on those who chose to be poor. High income people by yachts, limos, and gold plated toilet paper holders. The recent profits of oil companies are as a percentage of sales smaller then most corporations and much less then most banks and people like Microsoft. They also get less profit then the government gets by taxing them. If you want some of the profits buy some of the stock. The companies are publicly held. Robert quit whining like an American hating communist, and show me the country with the lily white foreign policy so I know where you are planning to move. Joe, if you want the country to follow it you better get rid of the Dems first and the RINOS second.

We must strive to ensure equal opportunity, not equality. Opportunity is the right, the remainder must be earned. Freedom of speech is protected against federal encroachment by the Constitution. Other forms of expression have consquences at all levels. Responsibility and accountability for ones actions is crucial to a free society. If you cannot control your self you must expect to occainally get some outside inference. Behavior has consquences.

From the former leader of one of the world's most hidebound bureaucracy's, who could expect anything less. I used to think Catholics were Christians. I am now firmly convinced otherwise.

helorat, Milton

Spoken like a true socialist and espouser of democracy. The first principle of a free society is that a person’s wealth is his own and neither the government’s nor another citizen has a claim on it. The freedom to whine about the government stealing it is not at all helpful unless you have the power to do something about it. Second Amendment anyone.

I believe Dr Westin is conveniently, if innocently, misquoting the explicit, but somewhat Constitutionally, limited freedom of speech in order to avoid the more implicit, less limited and God given right to privacy. This is no doubt a function of our courts programming our thoughts in contravention of the words and intent of the Constitution. But misquoting the Constitution is never acceptable.

helorat, Milton

I missed the part of the Bill of Rights which includes the citizen's right to know. From whence is this right derived? Many explicit rights are natural or God given, but the right to know is neither God given, natural nor implicit or explicit. The privilege to know what the government or some individual is doing must be derived from that government or the individual, privacy is a right, not the right to know. The right of citizens to know what is going on during a war is merely one ludicrous, and suicidal example. And three cheers, and four and one half stars for Joe! One correction: George Mason, one of the Framers of the U.S. Constitution, said, "Who are the Militia? They consist now of the whole people, except for a few public officers." The Press can easily make the stretch on the evolution of the printing press not to mention radio and TV but can't conceive of the evolution of firearms or the similarity of the words people and people.

Sure get rid of government welfare (corporate and individual) which is also “legislation for our own good” so the taxpayer does not have to foot the bill for drug abuse and allow the victims of "while intoxicated" crimes to sue for damages the offender and his immediate family for all they are worth and more. We no longer live in a free society, we live in welfare state. We must accept the consequences of the public being forced to pay for everything, including the stupidity of others, at the point of an IRS gun. Leave the drunks and drug addicts to die in the gutters unless their families or private charities come get them, and I will be all for legalization. Until then we must live with the madness of modern liberalism (socialism). You cannot have one without the other.

helorat, Milton

I agree with the perspective of legalization, as long as we would also remove the burden of the taxpayer to foot the bill for drug abuse and allow the victims of "while intoxicated" crimes to sue for damages the offender and his immediate family for all they are worth and more. We no longer live in a free society we live in welfare state. John Kaplan is an illogical, unthinking fool, and so is Anonymous from Reston VA. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

It does not take opulence to be a landowner and stakeholder unless you CHOOSE to live in a socialist urban area, where subsides for the do nothings cause prices to be outrageous for those who actually have to pay their own way. And guess what? The poor do not employ people. Madison and Jay were correct and are relevant even more now. Mike you seem to have THIS ONE figured out, assuming you see that it is still relevant along with what SHOULD be expected from government.

Westmoreland was a dupe, but wars MUST be censored. Our enemies currently need no intelligence apparatus. We have plenty of traitors in politics, the bureaucracy, academia, law and the media to feed them intel for free. There is no “right to know” for the public in war. That is a ludicrous concept. What would the “source” of that right be? Not the Constitution, not God! It is almost as foolish a concept as the idea Mike from Norwalk SSR puts forth that the war is unconstitutional. It is completely constitution. And Mike probably keeps a copy of the Constitution stuck up his butt where it is easy to read by candlelight. The Constitution tells how we may DECLARE war, not that we must so in order to engage in hostilities. Jefferson (you know one of those founder guys who had firsthand experience on the Constitution) attacked Islamic terrorists without Congressional approval or a declaration. Barbary Wars ring a bell? Needlessly killed??! We have not had a major attack on our soil since, and we have accomplished a vast number of positives. You have to be blind, stupid or, once again have your head firmly planted in your butt not to see that. The WTC in 1993, and 9/11 were atrocities; Dresden was not, Hiroshima was not, Nagasaki was not, and “Abu Ghraib” would not have gotten the “victims” into my fraternity house let alone qualify as an “atrocity”. Get some perspective! Talk about insufficient education, Anonymous (another word for morale coward), you are a classic example. Education and information are available to all for the taking. It just takes a little effort and intelligence to use it, the former is rare, the latter appears to have become non existent at times.

If the “haves” exploit the “havenots” into blowing themselves up, and taking some of us with them, because they blame us for all their self generated ills, then it is in our best interests to cram freedom down the throats of their leaders. To allow a breeding ground for suicide bombers to fester is....suicidal. This quote has no context to the current circumstance.
