What’s true is true no matter who said it. Unfortunately for them his predecessors ignored that fact and they were over run because of it. This fact has been proven by history over and over again. Any nation that has had any strategic or other value that has ignored the truth of it has eventually paid for it.

In other words, those that take a stand, for better or worse, will have to face the opposition -- if no stand is taken, there cannot be any opposition. I think it means that if I really care about something, then I have to be willing to fight for it. And better to be prepared for that fight, than to expect the opposition (in whatever form that may take) to give you fair warning.
