Griswold Quote “The right to be let alone is the underlying principle of the Constitution's Bill of Rights.” ~ Erwin N. Griswold (1904-1994) Solicitor General of the United States (1967-1973), Dean of Harvard Law School (1946-1967), member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, President of the American Bar Foundation (1971-1974) Constitution , Privacy , Respect , Rights , Tolerance Ratings and Comments Reply Anonymous 3/14/08 Wouldn't that be nice. Reply jim kilpatrick, austin, tx 3/14/08 The difference between a rattlesnake and our congress is this: A rattlesnake won't bother you if you just leave it alone. Would that we could say this about our government, dream on. Reply Logan, Memphis, TN 3/14/08 I can accept Democracy to where my nose begins; but then again, wouldn't that just be a Republic? Reply warren, olathe 3/16/08 Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 3/16/08 A paradox. No law is any good if it is not enforced. To be enforced there must be an enforcer, a sheriff if you will. While the Bill of Rights is about being left alone we must come together to enforce it. The Bill of Rights applies not only to the Federal Government but to state and local government as well. Reply E Archer, NYC 3/17/08 The Bill of Rights confers no rights -- it is a list of specific things that Congress CANNOT do -- areas in which they MUST leave us alone. What needs to be enforced is THAT! Waffler speaks of enforcement of 'laws' telling people what to do -- that is tyranny. You've got it backwards again, Waffler. Reply Waffler, Smith, Arkansas 3/18/08 Enforcement of the bill of rights includes stopping private citizens or any government or organization from interfering with peoples or groups rights to freedome. This does not get done without some folks coming together and saying enough is enough. Everyone existing alone and not associating with ohters is a strange social order and as history shows some few will try to interfere with others rights and freedoms, thus an enforcer is needed.
