Robert Dornan Quote

“...and by the way, Mr.Speaker, the Second Amendment is not for killing little ducks and leaving Huey and Dewey and Louie without an aunt and uncle. It's for hunting politicians, like in Grozny, and in the colonies in 1776, or when they take your independence away.”

~ Robert Dornan

January 25, 1994, responding to Bill Clinton's "State of the Union" speech

I like it, a lot

J. B. Wulff, Bristol, CT

This trio continues the ongoing surge to sustain the right of the people to keep and bear arms. I agree with it. There is a rising fear that "they" are working to take that right away. Once it is gone we will no longer be a free people. We can be trampled at will. No one speaks to the lesson our soldiers and the Israelis are learning every day. People with weapons and the skill and willingness to use them will not be put down easily. When we are faced with a threat from abroad that seeks our destruction, why does any sane person want to take away our firearms? We should follow the Swiss example.

The speaker shows himself to be nothing more than a barbarian, as are those who support this sentiment... especially any who claim to be Christian and would so advocate ignoring the commandment to not kill. I am perplexed that a Canadian site seems so absolutely fixated upon quotes about guns in America with the many days that this topic has been central to the quotes of the day... have they forgotten that Canada's gun laws (as they are in most civilized nations) are much more restrictive than those in America...

The "A" from Reston makes me smile (almost to an audible level) — while shaking my lowered head. The "A" from Reston. I also say hmmmm; considering the Reston source, I would be comfortable calling myself a Christian Barbarian. FYI;

The Hebrew noun פֶּה (pronounced ‘peh’) most often and closely means mouth, breath or word of wisdom. In ancient times it was almost never used in a form of demand. Commandment, from the Greek δεκάλογος - dekálogos means 10 words; AND from the Latin decalogus (decalogue) means 10 sayings

As per your reference; from the Old Testament Bible, Exodus 20:13 (thou shalt not kill); kill derives from the Hebrew רָצַח râtsach, (pronounced raw-tsakh’) means to murder or assassinate.

A Christian translation concerning your comment would be: A word of wisdom is to not murder or assassinate.

Is the "A" from Reston saying murder and assassination are not barbaric? As a Christian, I would say murders and assassinations are barbaric.

How are you defining barbaric?

I agree with the quote and JB Wulff. But I do not rule out that the threat we face might be from "within". After all, why would Napolitano be putting gun owner's, minutemen, vets returning from overseas...patriots in general on a watchlist? What are they afraid of? What are they hiding?

J Carlton, Calgary

Reston, as always you are quick to show your support of all avenues leading to a police state. In Canada the gun control laws are also being torn down publicly. In fact de-registration and destruction of the gun data base is in Parliament and past nearly all hurdles. A return to freedom is in the wind, mostly because sensible people are just plain sick of all the controlling crap coming from this government as well. That and taxpayer's are paying a fortune for something doesn't work for anyone but the criminals.

David Ben-Ariel, Toledo

Every treacherous politician should be reminded of this fact. They are not invincible and the corridors of power could be a dead end for them.

Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill Ehrsam, Toledo Oh

I agree. We choose not to have a king, queen, or dictatorial ruler. Instead we have the Constitution, the rule of law we all must abide by. Right now our polititians in Washington are trampling all over our Constitution. Our Republic is in trouble. The people of this country may have to rise up. Violence should always be the last resort when all else fails. But, It should always be an option.

You'll notice, if you please, that Mr Dornan no longer is a member of Congress!

J Carlton, Calgary

So Mr. Dornan wasn't making a valid point? He was, and you knew anything about being an American, you'd know it too.

Waffler, Smith

Dornan was generally believed to be insane. There has and neve has been a move to take away citizens guns. There was a move to control assault weapons used primarily by inner city thugs in drive by shootings. All this crap about taking away guns from law abiding citizens is just a trumped up charge for politicians (who otherwise have no clue about what issues are truly important to the American people) to try to garner a few votes from the unthinking and unread, and the unaware.

E Archer, NYC

Wafler demonstrates his proud ignorance again. Please note that in cities where hand guns have been declared illegal -- and yes, they were taken away, Waffler -- the violent crime rate became the highest in the nation: DC, Detroit, Chicago, NYC, LA. Making 'assault' rifles (i.e. the same weapons used by military) illegal is to make sure that the people will not have the power to resist the fascist police state that has been creeping in little by little. The object, of course, is to render the People powerless in every possible way: in debt perpetually, with no skills for self-reliance, no weapons for their own defense, no knowledge of the true actions of their government, no way to trade one's goods and labors without 'permission', government control of reproduction, no access to non-pharmeceutical medicines, no justice or rights to redress government corruption, no way to repeal unconstitutional statutes, and on and on. Individual power is therefore a crime.

Ken, Allyn, WA

I think most of us here can generally agree that Waffler is insane, but that doesn't make it necessarily so. Ad hominem does not make a good argument. It's just a reflection of someone who has nothing to say. Reston, when politicians turn into barbarians, it might be useful if the citizen can meet incivility with more than a kind supplication given from their knees. If you want peace prepare for war.

Torch, Helena, MT

Well said E Archer. Only a vigilant people can prevent our governments "fascist creep". I just hope we're not too late.
