I think Woody Allen was just making a funny here. Nothing sinister going on.

As if there is anything sinister about claiming that God does not infact exist. Most intelligent people do not believe in God. However there will always be an element of human kind that sees a face in the clouds. It is a survival instinct. It is safer to avoid an imaginary predator lurking in the shadows than to ignore it. I like Woddy Allen's " I don't fear death, I just don't want to be there when it happens" (maybe not the exact words)
