Society is certainly doomed.

Equality among men should refer to their standing before the law, their access to opportunity, the respect of their rights. If these are put after something else, then what have we got left? If these define our freedom, then freedom and equality almost are synonymous.

I have to agree with Reston. If you make no effort to reform or abolish what does not work, you are part of the problem. The Soviet Union, Rome, Greece, Babylonia, Egypt, and other empires have dissolved. Why not the IRS?

There is a lot of work being done by a few, and a little work being done by many. And the work never gets done. Many go home having done very little, showing no signs of the effects of labor in their persons, while a few go home having done most of the work, and showing it in their fatigued bodies and weary appearance. Perhaps what is needed is not less employees but more working ones. There is an abundance of adminstrators in school systems that produce virtually nothing, and letter carriers who do as little as possible, who are protected by their buddies in higher places.

I do not think they are content, though they are serfs. Plenty complain out loud or to themselves. Plenty disagree with policy and practice. I think they just can't agree about how to reform the status quo.

Well, he did not stutter, did he. I wish he were wrong. After all, someone is going to run things, and that someone (or those ones) should have the general good at the center of their plans. The state is bad when the statesmen are bad. The state is corrupt when those running it are corrupt. But there will be a state, as long as men run things.

And where might all the other far-left multimillionheirs have their millions invested? Far-left and far-right meet at the ends, where they are the same.

This condition that Rumbold describes came to be the status quo because of man's rebellion against the divine order, and will end when the Day of God's wrath comes. Providence had a different plan, but men would not collaborate - so they had to learn a lesson that they would never forget, and would never claim was something other than what it is. For Paradise to prevail, men must willingly limit their behavior to what Paradise might tolerate. Note that Rumbold did not say that Providence had sent men into the world, ready booted and spurred to ride, but that he could not believe that Providence had done so. Isn't that why he was hung?

I thought that the reason had to do with the perpetual indoctrination and propaganda programs carried out in public schools and universities, in the Congress, and in Hollywood, which implant erroneous ideas in the weak minds of uninformed homonids. Go ahead, educate them. But, as Carl Sanders wrote in the last line of poem #10 of "The people, Yes," ......."Don't expect too much."
