Maybe people should read the book -- I think that would clear up any doubts. Thanks, Anonymous.

Editor, Liberty Quotes

Thanks, Anonymous. We have not found this quote in Tragedy and Hope or anywhere else. Until a valid source is found, we will tag this quote as 'False.' But throughout the 1966 first edition of Tragedy and Hope, Quigley describes the history of these entities in detail and their common goal for global federation under the control of the international banking oligarchy. Quigley wrote the book as a history book, not as an expose of the New World Order -- he frankly supported the work of the CFR and was a member for many years.

Thank you, Anonymous, we have researched the quote and indeed the first sentence is not found anywhere in 'Tragedy and Hope' -- we have searched both the first edition in 1966 and the 1974 edition (with significant edits made to the first edition). We have added the correct quote here. http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/Carroll.Quigley.Quote.BEC7

Thanks, everyone for your research. The validity of the first half of the quote has been confirmed with minor changes: http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/Thomas.Jefferson.Quote.FCAF

"Is this ths same guy as I.I. Lenin leader of the fledgling Soviet Union?" No, Waffler, it is not Lenin. And yes, Waffler often posts as Anonymous for little quips. We usually update the posts with his name, but since it has been mentioned in this thread, we will leave it as is.

Thanks, Larry, Actually the quote is correct, but poorly duplicated here. Here is a link to the letter. This is the quote in its entirety:
"Convinced that the republican is the only form of government which is not eternally at open or secret war with the rights of mankind, my prayers & efforts shall be cordially distributed to the support of that we have so happily established. It is indeed an animating thought that, while we are securing the rights of ourselves & our posterity, we are pointing out the way to struggling nations who wish, like us, to emerge from their tyrannies also. Heaven help their struggles, and lead them, as it has done us, triumphantly thro' them." -- Thomas Jefferson

Thanks, Carlton, for all the info, but it is not relevant to the quote. We will archive this and find another place for it. It reminds me that we need to launch a discussion forum for topics such as gun control. Cheers, Eric.

Thanks, everyone. The quote can be found in Harper's Magazine, January 1957, written by Charlton Ogburn, Jr.. We will check on the Satyricon reference.

Hi, Waffler. Sorry, I couldn't resist: this web site is Canadian and hosted in Canada. Canada is still a monarchy, and we operate here as long as we are not considered a threat. Canada has a Charter of Rights and Freedoms which is often called the 'Constitution' -- the difference between it and the US Bill of Rights is that in the Charter the rights of the people are enumerated as set forth from the Crown via Parliament whereas the Bill of Rights declare what rights the Congress may not abridge and that the people have more rights (not enumerated) than those identified in the Bill of Rights -- also the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights are declarations of the people to those that wish to govern them as opposed to the rulers of the people telling their subjects what rights they have. Today we have the right to publish the ideas on this site, but how would we know of the sites that have been banned? Sites are banned all the time -- heck, if Google banned us, no one would be here. Cheers!

Thank you, A.W., your point has been made. The source has been updated as 'attributed' because, in fact, it is. Attributed means attributed. Even if in fact the quote is not from the attributed author, as long as the quote is commonly attributed to the author, it is in fact 'attributed.' We do our best to find sources for all of our quotes and our readers help us out the most. Thanks for contributing to the research!

Yes, Michel, I am the first to admit that our selection of Liberty Quotes is way too American. However, I have searched far and wide, and frankly, finding quotes about Liberty outside of America has been an arduous task. Please, if you have any Canadian quotes about liberty or English, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, ANY country other than the USA, please let me know. ;-)

We include sources to quotes when we have them. It is thanks to our readers that most are identified. This quote is from "Votes and Proceedings of the Town of Boston" published in a pampthlet in 1772 as referenced by Ellen Chase's 1910 book The Beginnings of the American Revolution. We have not confirmed the quote is from Adams per se; he was elected to the Massachusetts General Court (the colonial legislature) in June 1770. Cheers.

G Natural, the Federal Reserve Banks do publish pamphets and reports often with no reference to an author. We have updated the source with whatever information is found on the booklet.

Sorry for the confusion in the Editor's Note. Gus Hall was still alive in 1970 and BY 1970 both Gus Hall and Norman Thomas had quit politics as both the Socialist and Communist Parties had been folded into the Democratic party. Obviously, Norman Thomas quit politics earlier than 1970...

Thanks, E Archer. We have updated the quote source as 'Spurious' until we can find a source. Cheers.

The source has been updated. More of the quote here: "Money and not morality is the principle of commerce and commercial nations... Justice, honor, faith, must yield to the necessity of keeping themselves in place. The question whether a measure is moral is never asked, but whether it will nourish the avarice of their merchants, or the piratical spirit of their navy, or produce any other effect which may strengthen them in their places... This is the true character of [such governments] in practice, however different [their] theory; and it presents the singular phenomenon of a nation, the individuals of which are as faithful to their private engagements and duties, as honorable, as worthy, as those of any nation on earth, and whose government is yet the most unprincipled [ever] known."

J Carlton, Woodrow Wilson wrote in his book The New Freedom: "Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the U.S., in the field of commerce and manufacturing, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it."
