Well, as George Patton supposedly said, it's not our job to die for our country, it's our job to see that that other SOB dies for HIS country! I'm more on George's side, but it's a nice sentiment.

This is a fine example of liberal logic. The premise and the conclusion do not follow any form of known logic. It's like saying The game of football is viollent, therefore, modern football is imbecility. Or, how about this one...Protecting your home from armed intruders can be violent, therefore protecting your home is imbecility. Logic demands that both side of the argument must be equal, and they must be true. You can't say that All black cats are crazy, therefore all crazy cats are black. Nobody can swear to the verasity of the premis or the conclusion. However, the libs have come up with a good one at least once... "What if they had a war and nobody showed up?"

I think that the Admiral was an honorable man who knew that he had done nothing more than throw a big rock at a huge hornet's nest and that what Japan had done would come to no good for them. It is hard for anyone not alive in those days to imagine Japan as a hated enemy of America. I think that speaks volumes for both our peoples.

Peace is merely that time between wars. History has shown that humans are incapable of living in peace. We haven't "evolved" quite as far as our egghead professors would like us to believe. We are an equal opportunity society when it comes to war, hell, even our own country tried its best to destroy itself in the War Between the States. All races, creeds, and religions are welcome. No one is left behind.

The Founders knew in their hearts the troubles the future would bring. They understood well how history repeats itself. They tried to build checks and balances into our system of government, but they also knew that greed and immorality would be the death of our liberties. Since you can't legislate against greed and immorality, you can only hope that the people would have the common sense to elect those who will best serve the people, not themselves. Well, that isn't working so well today. Perhaps the upcoming elections will rectify the problem of self-serving politicians and greedy power -grabbers at all levels of government.

No, I don't believe Spencer was using satire. He was dead serious. That is how socialist think. Government has no business interfering in the lives of citizens, at least on in this country. We fought a bloody Revolutionary War to get away from such government mandates by the British Monarchy. If people are to educate themselves, the government could give incentives, such as the right to vote in Federal elections. This would prevent the poor and uneducated from voting their ownselves more and more "benefits" from the feds. If they are too lazy to educate themselves and too lazy to work at the menial work that is inevitably left to the under-educated, then they deserve to live a minimal existence until they get the message to prepare themselves for the real world of the working people. Opportunities should abound for those who show the initiative to succeed. Good-intentioned coddling of the lazy will be the downfall of all of us.

This plain, clear statement is wonderfully refreshing. Federally mandated education of children is when this country began it's decline into the socialist web that has enclosed our society today. The only way to cut our way out is to turn the education of our children over to the states, and keep home schooling as an option. Open it up to the market for competition.

I believe in taxes, but keep your mitts off the money that we make through the sweat of our brows. Let them get their tax revenues from the sale of goods -- not on the production of goods. Taking the money we earn to redistribute most of it to the "less fortunate" is a cover for redistributing wealth to those most like to vote for them. Obama is not only blatantly doing that he is in bed with big labor unions. And we wonder why we no longer produce anything of value in this country. What the government doesn't steal from your income, the labor unions will...and it's all to scratch each other's backs. I don't know about you, but I am sick of Obama's government telling us its raining while they pee on our legs. Beware of balancing the budget also. All that does is force the government to reduce the social safety nets and, by force of law, increase taxes in order to balance the budget. The tax burden on the middle class and the poor will be even greater.

My wife has run small businesses for years and she is always getting into jams with the IRS. Wo only had one horrible experience when they cleaned out our bank accounts to pay back taxes that we weren't even aware of. For the most part the IRS agents have been very helpful and have bent over backwards to help her get out of her jams. Personally, I think it's best just to pay your taxes and if you have a complaint, attach a note to your check saying that you are paying the taxes under protest. It's the only chance you'll have to recover your money if the guvment decides to recind an unjust tax. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! hahahahahaha

I can see why Anonymous, Reston won't sign his name. Nobody is saying that any entrepeneur should get his raw materials free. To say that society contributes to his getting rich is utter nonsense. That's like saying, "Oh let's give John Smith all our money and make him rich." How childish is that thinking? The only way in which society contributes anything is through their voluntary acts of purchasing the good produced by Mr. Smith. If his good are inferior, they stop "contributing" by ceasing to buy his stuff. He then goes out of business. Very simple economics. Now to think that "progresive taxation" is a good thing, then why don't thoe that earn under $30,000 have to pay taxes while the rich have to shoulder the entire burden? Almost half the wage earners in this country don't pay taxes, yet they receive "rebates" from the government. How many of these people are going to vote for a Republican who would take this fat greasy chicken off their table? Taxation is fine as long as it doesn't tax the wages earned from one's own efforts. What an affront to human dignity is it to have a government simply come along and take what they think is their fair share of the fruit of someone else's labor? It is shameful and despicable what our government does to it's citizens. Anyone -- not the invalid or the mentally unable --who gets a free dime from the government should have to earn it in some way. They should be made to do menial, degrading jobs to earn their bread...then maybe they will look around and get some dignity and look for a real job.

Just remember this folks...history repeats itself. Firing squads and all. Vote these clowns out. ALL OF THEM!

Hey Anonymous, don't be afraid to stand up and speak. You're an American aren't you. The two that are married are Pivins and Cloward. They are the masterminds behind what's going on this country today. If you want a real shock, read what these Marxist extremists have to say about society and the government. Obama is a big fan, by the way. By the way, this professor at Yale is just the tip of the iceberg, there's thousands of them teaching at all levels of our fine government school system.

I rate this quote 5 stars because it is so enlightening to what is going on in our government today. It is interesting that an ego-maniac like Hitler should tell the people of Germany and the whole world that the ego must be supressed for the good of the state. I guess that means everyone's ego except the Furher's. Also, for those who have been educated by the "State"...when Communists and Nazis speak of the "State" they don't mean the states of the U.S. of A. They mean the government of a country. I just want to put that out there so when libs hear about state's rights they don't get it confused. I am always amazed at how much crap the American people are ready to put up with. Here we have a full-blown Nazi/Marxist/Socialist in the White House and we just shrug our shoulders and say, "what can you do?" What can you do? Well for one thing, you can vote. And remember, votes have consequences as we are looking at those consequences today. The DemocRATs "compromised" and allowed 38 billion dollars in cuts to the budget. Do you know how much that is? If you had a trillion dollars that would be about a quarter and a dime. How can people not know that? We are doomed because of the ignorance of the masses thanks to our educational system being owned and operated by the "State."

J Carlton's response seems to be disjointed. What does the history of Lincoln have to do with Nancy Pelosi's idiotic statement? Carlton seems think that the hundreds of books on the history of Lincoln were all written by people who were being paid to slant it a certain way. The more I think of it, Carlton and Pelosi are very similar in their thinking.

How true! Notice how the industrial governments were able to buy scientists to go along with the global warming lie? Countries are actually buying and selling carbon credits in Europe and here. This is the biggest scam ever perpetrated on the world.

GunnyCee, Durham

This is the reason why the federal government decided to take over the education of our children. Before that, it was the responsibility of the separate states. I'd like to see it go back to that. We'd better if we want to stop the socialist machine who already have our children brainwashed.

What's even funnier are those who want to save the climate! WTF? The arrogance of these people is mind-blowing. They actually think that man has destroyed the climate and they are bound and determined to right that wrong. Talk about tilting at windmills. As for Henry David; he was not a realist, but an idealist. He was a square peg then, and he'd be one today. Of course, if we were all square pegs, then I suppose the world would have to adapt.

Mike has just about said it all. Good job.

GunnyCee, Durham

Mike, what amazes me about today's situation in almost all it's many facets, is the amazing similarities of the 18th century. We've got all the same problems except for slavery. But we've just replaced that with the Welfare system.

Waffler, you must be high again. You seem to be having a good time tweaking the noses of conservatives. However, you don't really contribute a lot to the overall sophistication of this forum. You keep repeating the same liberal dogma with no contribution to the expansion of knowledge that you would discover if you actually read the conservative contributions.

GunnyCee, Durham

Waffler, nobody here is suggesting that a country should not have taxes, you twit! There are taxes and there are confiscatory taxes. Coolidgte was trying to tell dunderheads like yourself that Congress doesn't understand that people are working hard to pay their taxes. They don't seem to realize that. At the rate they are spending, we should be able to walk to Mars on the river of dollars that our budget deficit represents.

Mr. L. Hanson, you should thank your lucky stars that the South DIDN'T win the war of secession. Had they won, the state of slavery might very well be alive and well today in both the North and South. The reason the North had to send enforcers to the South during the Reconstruction Period was because the South, although defeated militarily, was still determined to dominate the North as they had before the war with their "Slave Power" vote. The North could not compete with the 3/5th law that allowed the South to represent each slave with 3/5 of a vote. Therefore, they always were in the majority. Even though the slaves were Emancipated by Lincoln, after the war, the Southern Democrats had no intention of giving them the same rights as a white man. Now, instead of "Slaves" representing a 3/5 vote, they reworded their state constitutions to include properited whites (White Planters) and others who had enough property so as to be able to avoid coercion by the state, and that "ALL OTHERS" would be represented by a 3/5 vote. Nobody was fooled by who the "AlLL OTHERS" were. Northern Congressman named Sumner who fought for Civil Rights for the Southern Negros was almost beaten to death by a Southern Democrat's cane...right in the House! The North had to force the South to give their freed slaves civil rights and that is what the Northern troops were all about. The South should take the rap for the atrocities of slavery. Ever since the Constitutional Conventions, they threatened to shatter the fragile beginnings of a union if they were not allowed to continue their practice of slavery. Even today, the issue of what to do with the blacks is alive and well. It was a Southern Democrat LBJ who thought he would solve it by creating the Great Society. We can see it only made matters worse.

Byron, I also like that other quote. Both of them fit today's political arena. The so-called liberal elite - the highly educated liberal - still doesn't understand that the American people can see right through them. They don't seem to comprehend that their actions don't match their words, but everyone else sees and disaproves.

Dr. Sowell is one of the few clear thinkers left in this country today. He is a syndicated columnist among his other accomplishments. He is a conservative and he is black and that drives the socialist/commies in this country up the wall. I challenge any of the socialist pinheads that post here to give an example of where they think socialism works. If they bring up Switzerland or Sweden, they would be mistaken because, like America is not a pure capitalist country, they aren't pure socialists. In fact, every socialist program we have in this country is ready to go broke because they don't create wealth, they ony drain it.

When one reads the true history of the Great Depression you'll find that the government caused it by creating easy credit and wall street did their share to bring itself down by allowing buying stocks on the margin. Once the Depression was in full swing and Roosevelt took the reins, he made it worse by creating busy work (ccc) and many other socialistic programs that did nothing but create a dependency class of people who would always and perpetually vote to increase their "benefits." We're doing the same darned thing today. It's exactly because the bad people have read history and know how to bring down an economy on purpose, whereas the first Great Depression was caused by stupidity and compassion by liberals who thought they were doing a good thing.
