If a prosecutor goes to a grand jury and the defendant is no billed, he is free to get another grand jury, as many as necessary, to get what he wants. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 11/7/13 re: Paul Grant quote Mike and J summed it up very well. 3 Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 11/7/13 re: John Adams quote No matter what the judge says when charging the jury, they have ultimate power to find a person guilty or not guilty. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 11/7/13 re: David L. Bazelon quote In other words, a jury can find a person not guilty if the law broken is a bad law, or, if they perceive it to be so. My late brother in law was a top criminal lawyer in Ohio and when asked about jury nullification, he had never heard of it. They must not be teaching it in law school. Shaffer quote Watchman, keep it short or no one will comprehend what you are saying. After glancing at this , keeping it short won't help. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/31/13 re: Thomas Jefferson quote The collectivists in Washington are only interested in keeping their jobs and being reelected. They care not a whit about what's right for the U.S.A. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/31/13 re: Sheldon Richman quote J Carlton, it's exactly like the present regime inside the beltway. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/31/13 re: Milton Friedman quote Maybe it's because intellectuals aren't all that intellectual. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/30/13 re: Butler D. Shaffer quote Wilson was a terrible president but the quote is right on target. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/30/13 re: John Stuart Mill quote Anyone who donates money to TV evangelists, even if he" talks every morning to God", is being deceived. Atrocities happen daily around the Globe in the name of God. 2 Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/30/13 re: Jarret B. Wollstein quote Don't you just love it when a politician with a hare brained bill says that " the people demand it". When will voters learn that the only thing that 90% of politicians want is to be reelected. Maybe 99%. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/30/13 re: Butler D. Shaffer quote Can't add much to what Mike said except to say that Obama care is a perfect example of the second sentence of the quote. The "state" is requiring people to buy health insurance with thousands of IRS agents hired to enforce it. As Woodrow Wilson once said, "Government, in it's final analysis, is organized Force". 1 Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/28/13 re: John Kenneth Galbraith quote J Carlton and Mike summed it up well. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/22/13 re: Lucius Annaeus Seneca quote Well said E Archer. 1 Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/22/13 re: Lucius Annaeus Seneca quote I am a former religious fundamentalist. We, in our Bible church, were always taught to believe, never to question or think for ourselves. We never questioned that an invisible man in the sky was making a list and checking it twice to see if you were being naughty or nice. Oh, I forgot, every single word in the Bible was inspired by God, well, maybe not. The God of the Old Testament was pretty cranky at times. Maybe He went to anger management classes before the New Testament was written, maybe not. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/22/13 re: Ethan Allen quote What the heck is "true religion" anyway? All religions are man made, including Christianity. Some are worse than others and Islam comes to mind. Catholicism has a real checkered past with Popes selling indulgences and covering up recent horrific child molestation to protect the sorry reputation of the church. Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/22/13 re: John Stuart Mill quote We have come a long way from witch burning but not far enough. There are vestiges of this sorry time still abounding in many people. Why then would you have a War on Drugs that is ruining this country. Perhaps because people want to criminalize certain vices of which they don't approve. If cops find a few ounces of pot in your car, you lose your car, and maybe go to jail. This is insanity in a so called free country. We haven't yet gotten over those puritanical impulses from over 200 years ago. 6 Reply jim k, Austin, Tx 10/18/13 re: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe quote I'm not sure "best" and "government" belong in the same sentence. As L. Neal Smith once said, government is a disease masquerading as it's own cure. A Thomas Paine quote, " Government in it's best state is but a necessary evil, in it's worse state, an intolerable one". Our government would have to improve to get up to worse.
