“Banning guns addresses a fundamental right of all Americans to feel safe.”

Banning Dianne Feinstein from the floor of the United States Senate, would make all lawful, honest and upright gun owners feel safer.

E Archer, NYC

What about the absolute fundamental right "to keep and bear arms"? We can't just blame Dianne Feinstein for undermining the rights of the People, but also those who elect her into office term after term. Her views and the bills she promotes and supports are as socialist as can be. So why does she keep her seat in Congress?

F. Tremblay, Anjou, QC

The key word here is "feel". Not "think" or "reason". That's the LAST thing they want.

David L. Rosenthal, Hollywood

Hilter, Stalin, and Castro used similar arguments to disarm the people.

Brenda, Miami

Note the "feel safe", not BE safe. Impressions are everything, especially since the evidence points to the reality of BEING safe requires the right to bear arms and protect oneself.

Anonymous, Reston, VA US

I am more safe when the glocks & machine guns (etc) are only owned by the military and police forces... and every farmer and hunter is welcomed to keep their shotguns and 22s and even their muzzle-loaders... they are not welcomed (or have any need for) 50 round clips and semi-automatic options. The largest problem with this whole "debate" is that the word "gun" means different things to different people.

Joe, Rochester, MI

Banning guns is un-American, unconstitutional and socialist/communist. .22s are okay? An M-16 is a .22 caliber, and muzzle-loaders are often .70 caliber. The Second Amendment states "...keep and bear ARMS...", which includes pistols (semi-auto and revolvers), rifles (bolt action, semi-auto, even machineguns), shotguns (singles, doubles, pump, and autoloaders), knives (manual or switchblades), swords, spears, axes, and even martial arts weapons. Statistically, more guns means less crime. Statistically, the police are more likely to commit crimes than the average citizen. If criminals breaks into your home, late at night to rape and murder your family, then steal what they can carry out ... do you want one bullet in your gun? Of course not, you want 50, so they don't get you while you are ramming a ball into your muzzle-loader.

Logan, Memphis, TN

Stupid Americans will do anything so long as the facade is that they're safe... Your world of an armed government and an unarmed populace is a very, very, very, very scary world Reston. And yes, for protection from government, I probably DO need a 500 round clip and a FULLY automatic machine gun. Cheesy movie, but a great quote, "The people should not be afraid of their government - the government should be afraid of it's people".

Interestingly enough, Americans indeed have no right to feel safe. Actually, self-defence is a fundamental American right. It's not just a fundamental right, but a fundamental responsibility.

Bob, Eugene, Oregon

Wot they said! -Except for the commie in Reston.

E Archer, NYC

I would feel safer if every adult owned and was trained in the use of automatic weapons and was ready to use them when necessary. Like Switzerland -- one of the last free republics on the planet.

Robert, Sarasota

We must start somewhere and be a leader not sit back and use mindless dialogue and call each other names – its exactly those name callers that shouldn’t have guns, and Reston well done for your brave words - its amazing Americans do not know their own history - notably and mostly, only innocent leaders and great men have been killed by the idiot with a gun. You say if they need them they find them - well this may be true but while we have this mind-set we’ll never move off the plate. If you think Guns make a political statement and keep you safe then you are a long way from the seventh parallel – there will be a few who forfeit their lives in this cause but if you put a person behind bars for carrying a gun (ten years should do it), in addition to any crime they commit, things will change. As for the Government – well, I can’t think of two many civilized countries (if you consider America civilized) that have found it necessary to rise up with guns against its leaders. Let’s be brave fellow countrymen and follow the leadership of a great politician Dianne Feinstein and ban guns, but do it with conviction...

Terry Berg, Occidental, CA

I'm generally though not always of a 'liberal' bent AND I own and use weapons when necessary, like when I surprised and held a burglar after he'd exited my house until the sheriff arrived. Trust me, had I NOT been armed, the outcome would likely have been different. If necessary, I WILL shoot someone. D. F. may wish to think that 'feeling' safe is a worthwhile pursuit. It's not. Face it, you're 'safe' when you're finally dead. Til then, I'd prefer to rely on myself for my 'safety'.

"Experience should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the Government's purposes are beneficent. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of their liberty by evil-minded rulers. The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding." -- Justice Louis D. Brandeis

    Logan, Memphis, TN

I'm curious to know what would have happened if the "innocent leaders and great men" who have all been killed "by the idiot with the gun" would have been killed instead with another type of projectile weapon - for instance: a frozen water balloon or a sling-shot. If logic would follow, the same gun-hating people would be lobbying to have freezers taken out of all the homes of America and a Bill proposed to ban all ice because it can be used with a slingshot to kill people! What the gun-hating people fail to realize, or just ignore all together, is that a gun is just a tool. The murders that are going to happen will happen regardless of the tool used (knife, sword, spear, bow-and-arrow, lance, gun, sling-shot, poison, etc.). Murderous intent is the cause of murder, not guns. Every now and again you hear of some moron who didn't take the precautions needful to keep their kids or someone else away from this particular 'tool' - There are also several cases that don't make it into the media of small kids going into shock and dying because of a boiling pot fell on them or they fatally cut themselves with a kitchen knife. Should we ban all kitchen pots and knives while we're at it? How about a Hunting Knife? No one REALLY needs one of those, do they? After all, they're only really used to kill or skin innocent animals, so we should get rid of them too?? ... Oh, and if you can't think of any, or many, civilized countries that have had to rise up against it's oppressive government with guns, then I would suggest you invest in an accurate history book. Just keep in mind that it's not about "guns" - as said, a gun is a tool - and in today's society it is the most common tool of defense. If we were living between 500 B.C. and A.D. 1300 then we'd be talking about banning swords, spears, and horses...

    Terry Berg, Occidental, CA

Logan is on point here. You can kill someone with your bare hands for that matter. Let's not go to the logical conclusion with that one, shall we.

    Steve, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

How can you feel safe if everyone has a gun? The most backwards thinking I've ever heard of! Correct me if I'm wrong, but some congressman in the United States actually introduced legislation to make it mandatory for every citizen to own a gun. How completely crazy do you have to be to think this way? I guess I am somewhat comforted to know that according to the popular vote in the last U.S. presidential election, I hope that about half of all Americans don't necessarily feel this way. I'm sorry, and I apologize to those of you who agree with Dianne Feinstein, but what seems to be the general popular position of the United States on guns, war, and world order really scares me. I think that the real question is, how has the United States created a society where many, many, people are scared to live without a gun, and why do so many people hate their government? Governments are never perfect, very often fallible, and can never please everyone, but they should be able to convince people, even their detractors and opponents, what makes sense for the safety of their society as a whole. But when you have a society that has precipitated the formation of very substantial armed and organized group of citizens, with a genuine hatred for their own government, you must question the "right to bear arms" dogma.

    Ban Dianne Feintein!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Kent, Sarasota

Well done Steve, at last you have brought some sanity to the argument - why do you think they don't allow guns on an aircraft - take this logic to its ultimate conclusion and you will conclude the obvious.

    Helberg, Minnesota

yeah, and lets ditch the pesky 1st Amendment, too. It causes too many hurt feelings!

    Roderick T. Beaman, Jacksonville, Florida

Many people cite John Kennedy as an example of a great person whose life was cut short by bullets. This is part of their argument for gun control. Problem is that John Kennedy was a life time member of The National Rifle Association.

    Devon, Edmonton, AB

Even if the mere posession of guns caused people to run amok in the streets, shooting one another, I would still feel safer in such a situation than in one where the government would have exclusive rights to own and operate firearms.

    Dave, Portland,OR

    Thanks dog!!!!!!!! you saved me!!!!!

I was very happy to see so many sensible answers to miss Feinsteins quote here, as well as many logical replies to what her supporters here have said and briefly considered adding my own, however, this often becomes exhausting, people with that mindset are rarely willing to rely upon reason to come to a worthwhile conclusion.

    Not Convinced, Pittsburgh

Feinstein needs to read what the early founding fathers said about protecting our liberty with guns. It's very enlightening.

    Ken, Long Island

Strange, I did not see that listed in the Bill of Rights... The gun is the ONLY equalizer out there that lets the 90 pound woman stand on equal ground with the 200 pound attacker. Even if all people were disarmed (impossible) you would only be LESS SAFE as the larger and stronger criminal will regularly prey upon the weaker and now 100% disarmed honest citizen. Look at the UK which has seen an astronomical increase in violent crime since their ban took effect! When the criminal need not fear the citizen the citizen must live in fear of the criminal. I wonder... does Ms. Feinstein have armed security?

    Dan, Switzerland

    BOOOOOOOOOH!

    Angus Stewart Pinkerton, England

It is better to be judged by twelve, than to be carried by six. Regardless of the idiocies of the law, I will *always* go armed.

    Jim, Columbia

It is my view that society reaps what it sews. Where are the parents of the kids on the streets that get involved with gangs, drugs? Where is the accountability? People want to blame guns for America's problems, not the individuals commiting the crimes with the guns. I am amazed by the mass mindset that I see regarding taking away the rights of a legitimate citizen who obtains a firearm by legal means to keep for the protection of themselves and their family. I guess it did work for Hitler, didnt it? We should ban vehicles too, they kill far more every year than firearms. And while we are at it, we should also ban Physicians. They too seem to be the cause of much death by malpractice.... Where would it all end?

    Undecider, Sacramento

The Constitution doesn't say anything about the right to have guns. It only specifys "arms", which could be knives, slingshots or muzzle loading fire arms--originally envisioned by the framers of the Constitution. If some of the Supreme Court justisces rule gun bans are unconstitu- nal, gun control isn't stopped from specifying a limit on bullets, caliber, etc. No real disaster for gun ban advocates.

    ashley, saginaw

I don't have anything nice to say, so I'll just proceed with giving this looney old b*tch a big, fat thumbs down.

Still Working for a Living, Oklahoma City

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."-Ben Franklin. There is a reason why the right to keep and bear arms exists immediately after the right to free speach- without the second, you would have already lost the first. It is not about hunting or self defence....it is about having the tools required to keep our government in check! "But if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people, while there is a large body of citizens, little if at all inferior to them in discipline and use of arms, who stand ready to defend their rights" Alexander Hamilton

    Range Officer, Nashville

The people who make our laws do not live in the REAL WORLD - most have security details, drivers or staff who handle their dailyu outside activities. When was the last time you heard about a senator or congressman being robbed or his / her home invaded. THey live in their bubble and thinks they know what isa best for the rest of us. If they had to spend two weeks in the shoes of the common man, they would change their position. But as we all know, they will never admit to this.

Personally, I agree with this quote 100%, and I think gun use should be limited, strictly monitored, and anti-gun legislation should be enforced. I respect the opinions of those who disagree with me. And I'm not a communist or a socialist.

      David, Houston

Some of these responses are indeed humorous. When the 2nd amendment was written, the country had just sucessfully overthrown an oppressive government. This was indeed done by farmers with standard weapons of the era. The intent of the American Founding Fathers is obvious. The public's right to bear arms is to protect the populace from it's government. Check the history of Scotland. Swords were outlawed there in the MIddle Ages so England could impose the King's will with little opposition. People who feel a benign government would never abuse a disarmed populace are deluding themselves. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

      David, Chattanooga, TN

FEEL SAFE? What about actually being safe? The perfect example of how guns are not the problem is the 50 states with concealed handgun permit systems. No problem with all the law abiding, gun packing citizens who carry guns everyday. Every citizen around an armed law abiding citizen is safer because of that armed citizen. Even if they don■t know it! I don■t care if you feel safe, I only care about real safety.

      R. Ocket, Cape Canaveral, FL

Any rampantly liberal gun haters out there care to address why the most virulent of your type always seem to want to ban guns for the public, yet want to have THEIR guns to protect THEMSELVES? ie; Rosie O'Donnell, Madonna, George Clooney, etc?

"Those who would give up essential freedoms in order to feel safe deserve neither safety or freedom." paraphrased from a Ben Franklin quote

Senator Feinstein is one of many in our government that cares not at all for our rights.Feel safe ? Something that is not possible to be given to anyone by a government;one person to another, yes. She is one of those that believe the Constitution is a 'living' document, instead of being a framework that the government must work within. Validate your 2nd Amendment Rights.Carry.

The movemnet to ban guns is the movement of the NWO. They want us disarmed so they can rule as they please and cull the herd as they see fit. Stop the NWO in it's tracks. Buy a gun.

      Rich, Salt Lake

You all in agreement with Feinstein do realize that home invasions, rapes, and murders actually do happen right? Do you really think a 100 lb lady or a disabled elderly person(lets say one of your loved ones who fits this category - maybe you?) can actually defend themselves against one(or several) of these would be aggressors? A kitchen knife is not going to do. You do realize that many criminals get their firearms through illegal gun trafficking and that many of them are fully automatic(watch "Gangland" on History Channel) right? I'm not trying to be a jerk. I really think you'd change your stance if you were personally attacked(assuming you lived) and had no means to defend yourself.

      Mike, Norwalk

Banning guns addresses a fundamental right of all Americans to feel safe ? WHAT ? ? ? That is a lie. Those that are afraid of guns are also afraid of their own shadows and others right to be free. To feel safe is not a right. To defend one's safety by any means possible is a right.

      J Carlton, calgary

To all you gun control idiots...You'll be proud to know that you are in infamous company. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Idi Amin, Pol Pot and a host of other tyrants and murderers would happily agree with you...Gun Control Works. If you're trying to rule a society with and iron fist or commit genocide that is... Not one of you can make a valid or moral argument against my natural right to defend my life or that of my family. You are immoral idiots, one and all.

The quote is 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness'. Notice the first 2 are absolutes...you are alive, you are free. Happiness is subjective, and we only have the right to pursue that happiness. We are not promised happiness...which is a feeling.

This site is a racket!! The overwhelming support for the 2nd amendment is well reasoned and founded in historic reality. While the fairy tales the opponents are claiming have historic support is absolutely bogus.

Yet the libs unicorn stories and lands of rainbows and lollipops... All have five stars. While every well reasoned historically accurate remark gets a thumb down. Given the numbers commenting here, that is only possible if you are controlling who can and cannot vote.... Or following b0s lead and just rigged the voting.

I just wonder if anyone studies the founding of this great county anymore. The Bill fo Right or the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution are God given rights that can not be legilated away. I do believe that the 2nd amendment falls with in the first 10. Therefore our founding fathers who by the way is a lot smart than any person today, laid a plane to portect us from ourselves. The 2nd Amendment was not put in but for one primary reason and that is power, If the people are armed that can maintain the power where the founding fathers entended the power to be. Feinstein and the rest of the power hungery politicians want to control guns to control people for power under the lie of protecting you. I know personally three people who saved their lives by killing their attackers. I have used a gun to stop gang members from starting fights in a park. Remember it is about government control. I want to be free.
