The schools are not nurseries of progress and improvement, but conservatories of tradition and unvarying modes of thought.”Ludwig von Mises ~ Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973) Economist and social philosopher Education , Free Thought , Intelligence , Knowledge , Obedience , Repression , Statism , Tradition Ratings and Comments 1 Reply Tony D., Toronto, Ontario 1/6/09 So right. No wonder we're in the mess we're in now!! 3 Reply will, Portsmouth 1/6/09 What is the purpose of education if not to build a mind to operate within society? Here is the basis of the basic education. Institutions may impose ideas on us but it is up to us if we accept their arguments and follow the docterines we hear. More often the greatest thinkers have been educated but have taken existing knowledge and found the loop hole in the accepted truths of their time. Where would Hawkins be without Newton? Where would Kant have done without Descartes? Those who walk before us in history show an example, it is up to the next generations to examine this and determine conclusions of their own. 4 Reply Mike, Norwalk 1/6/09 The education here being spoken of is not necessarily math, history, science, reading, grammar, philosophy, logic, etc. but rather, how to apply and expand such. The overlords of education want nothing to disrupt the status quo of their sacred power and control system. 6 Reply Bryan Morton, Stuart, Florida 1/6/09 I think schooling would have been a better term to use than education. There's a huge difference between education and the rote memorization of schooling. Schooling produces uneducated slaves. Education produces free individuals. 4 Reply jim k, austin 1/6/09 I agree with Bryan of Stuart, Fla. Well said, Bryan. 1 Reply A.WOODS, Gloucester 1/6/09 Agreed, Bryan. Well said indeed. I wonder how von Mises came to this conclusion. 4 Reply E Archer, NYC 1/7/09 There is a difference between 'education' and 'learning' just as there is a difference between 'knowledge' and 'wisdom.' If you want to become wise, there is a great deal that must be unlearned. ;-) 3 Reply Anonymous, M. Norman Park 1/8/09 Wonderful. College in four lines. 2 Reply Ronw13, Oregon 4/7/17 Such a highly skilled individual, Considering what Mises found in America, progressive income tax, positivism and Keynesianism." You're all a bunch of socialists." were his thoughts. Explains the uncompromising position Mises held for the educational system.
