I think the philosophy should be expanded to today's religious bigotry. Huckabee but especially Romney. I wouldn't vote for either of them but what is happening there is not pretty.

To not deal or do business with people you don;t like or who you feel don't like you is a basic human right. To refuse to do business with them in consort with others is what the nonviolent movement was all about. Mike do you have problems with Huckabee and Romney personally concerning bigotry or with their denominational affiliations.

Waffler, I could care less about their denominational affiliations. Neither understands or accepts liberty, individual sovereignty, inalienable rights, the laws of nature or of nature's God, a body politic as was constitutionally designed or the beliefs of his fellow man. While Huckabee covers more the fascist end of socialism, Romney remains a poster child for communism.

He was right... I have a dream "One day, we will all be one human family" Mike, I agree, we need to move away from this rhetoric - this is an individual belief and their religious comments should not be included in political discussions - it goes against all what our forefathers tried to prevent. All people are basically good, including Christians, but it’s when they try to subjugate others through the platform of political banter that we become corrupt.

The Gandhian philosophy liberated India from British Imperialism. The British had standing armies with the most advanced weaponry in the world and yet could not stand up to a people who refused their 'services.' When Americans are ready to take their country back, it will happen here, too. Liberty is the destiny of the American people -- the next reformation-revolution is inevitable. Better to resist now than to be martyred later.

lol Waffler, the answer to your implication in question form is neither. I am Christian and, am sure many of the beliefs that both Huckabee and Romney hold personally are consistent with Christ's teachings. Even Obama gets in on the fray some what because of his early Muslim background. My concern is that the biased media and many bigoted people's actions, as practiced, addressing the extra-political philosophy and affairs of the candidates leads to increased bigotry and violence. Thanks to individuals like Dr. King, I believe that non-violent methods are decreasing the issue of race. On the other hand, I also believe that non-violent methods can promote violence as philosophical/religious intolerance and bigotry (atheism to zen) are now being flamed.

From what I read Huckabees populism is turning the Established Religious Right off! I am not up on what Romney said or stands for on that subject. Apparently the two are as far apart on their sensitivities and priorities as two republicans can be.

I agree with the author; after all, look how long he and his efforts have been remembered and celebrated, as well as those of Gandhi, and of course, Jesus Christ! And since Mike decided to incorporate his political opinions in this forum, I'm voting for Huckabee!

Paula, good for you. More should stand up boldly in a non-violent declaration of their beliefs and actions.

Well, as I agree with the author and look over the entire spectrum of presidential candidates, I can't help but rest squarely in support of the Congressman from Texas. He's absolutely the ONLY one who has talked or promoted this ideology of civil disobedience. http://youtube.com/watch?v=FGrlZTlD-Sc

Nonviolent resistance was the only logical and moral choice IN THE UNITED STATES. It is not necessarily the only logical or moral choice everywhere. Nonviolent resistance is only effective against a government that is made up of mostly moral people. That is why it worked in India and the United States. Can anyone imagine nonviolent resistance working in the Stalinist USSR or Nazi Germany? If our own government gets to the point where it is not made up of moral people, nonviolent resistance will not be effective here either. The point is, use nonviolent methods while they still remain effective, while you still have a chance. Otherwise you are only left with terrible choices.

waren, olathe

Good job, Ken. Nonviolent resistance doesn't work in international settings either unless a threat of violence can back it up.
