I always love when people romanticize the tribal lifestyle. They were always at the throats or their neighbor tribe when they weren’t dying from a broken leg they did not know how to heal or flu of some sort. Average life of 35 years or so. Without the taxes it could not be accomplished out of thin air. Uhhh, dick. The rich are the only ones paying taxes. The top 5% of wage earners pay 55% of all federal taxes. Top 10% pay 66%, and top 50% pay 96.5%. That means that the poor half of this country are only paying 3.5% of the taxes. Yes, we are paying our fair share and the share of others Reply Doug, Calif 6/20/11 re: Robert A. Heinlein quote I’m a very conservative Republican who hates our high tax rates, but I disagree. Taxes pay for our military, the roads, traffic lights, police and fire, parks, and many services that benefit me greatly. There are core services that taxes are good for. It is the fact that we have expanded the role of government way beyond the vision of the founding fathers and turned taxation into a tool for redistribution of wealth that is wrong. Libertarian philosophies are useful for keeping a check on spending, but not grounded in reality in a global environment. A limited amount of taxation is a necessary evil. 1Reply Doug, Calif 10/14/10 re: Douglas Adams quote Perfect example of this is socialism. Society after society has witnessed the failure of this economic and social system only to repeat its error by believing for some reason that they actually have the ability to do it right this time. “We are the ones we have been waiting for.” Sound familiar? Reply Doug, Calif 9/15/09 re: Chinese Proverb quote I always loved that quote followed by the one about drinking beer in the boat all day, but I had to modify it for today’s socialist world. Modern version: Give a man a government entitlement and he will return the next day with his family wanting more as he promptly forgets how to fend for himself and slowly relinquishes his freedom. - Doug Stevenson 1 Reply doug, Calif 8/20/09 re: Max Victor Belz quote Thomas Jefferson has the above quote Reply Doug, Calif 8/17/09 re: Pat Paulsen quote Every year at Thanksgiving some liberal newspaper publishes a cartoon showing American Indians greeting the pilgrims as they arrive. In this they attempt to shame anti-illegal immigration advocates by showing how their forefathers were being treated well when they arrived uninvited and how there is some irony in that picture that we should all learn from today. What I learned is that the Indians allowed unchecked immigration to overrun them and look what happened to their societies. 3 Reply Doug, Calif 8/13/09 re: Ronald Reagan quote There is an old Chinese proverb that states: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Unfortunately we now have a modern version that describes the results of socialism: Give a man a government entitlement and he will return the next day with his friends and family wanting more and complaining “what have you done for me lately?” as he promptly forgets how to fend for himself and slowly relinquishes his freedom. - Doug Stevenson Reply Doug, Calif 8/10/09 re: Michel Eyquem De Montaigne quote Archer speaks the truth!
