That quote from the bible pertained to the inevitable creation of a tyrant when one person is given ultimate power. It in no way can be twisted to mean any thing else. There is no difference in Florida or Ohio than any other state. People like Gore are perfectly capable of exploiting quirks in election laws to make a big mess out of things. I have to disagree with what he thinks good government is. If a government seeks to "take care" of the people's needs it is really seeking control over its beneficiaries. Perhaps the text it was lifted from would clarify the quote for me. Good government stays out of your business as long as you stay out of the business of others. It is impossible to imagine a truly good government by my standards. We are just luck to have the one we have. In spite of all the ridiculous crap going on it still is much better than any other I know of.

This line of reasoning would have us believe that we started our enslavement by deciding to no longer live in caves and gather berries. Even then we were slaves to the benevolence of nature. The machine talked about gives one type of freedom while taking away another. We have to decide for ourselves what freedoms are the most important.

When did they not stop buying votes? Where is this guy coming from? I can’t believe things were that different back then. Human nature surely can't have changed that much. My recollection of his culture would have me believe that it was actually worse then than now. I have to assume that this quote is an example of his satire and speaks more to the Roman's softening resolve and lack of determination that led to its downfall.

This quote addresses the pack mentality of man. Like an animal that becomes wounded or sick then is attacked by his pears and killed. This is not true for all animals but I have seen it many times. Kill the weak. The same thing goes on with mankind. People are repulsed by some one because of some type of perceived difference or weakness. Children do this on play grounds and adults do it everywhere. The manner is often different but the instinct is still the same. Hitler exploited this instinct along with Darwin's theory to try to eliminate every one he perceived to be weak. It still goes on today all over the world. It is the stuff tyrants are made of.
