J Carlton is right. When a elected official in Washington is sworn in, he or she swears to uphold and defend the Constitution . 99% of them should be arrested for perjury since they do no such thing.

Friedman is right on target again.

This so called War on Drugs does exactly what Mr. Friedman says. Thugs get rich, crime increases, jail population increases, lives are ruined, drugs are more available to children, law enforcement is corrupted, and all because of this drug war.

This quote reminds me that when a politician proposes some hare brained bill, he usually says that "the people demand this." In most cases "the people" have never given it a second thought, much less demanded it.

I wish that this was all they did in the current Congress.

Sort of like folks who believe that Obama really has the best interests of the country at heart.

Hitler was a book burner. Book burning is always wrong.

Oops, matters worse not "mattera" worse.

jim k, Austin, Tx

And you can bet that the government program will cost a fortune and make mattera worse. Then the politicians will say that they just didn't spend enough on it and will appropriate more money.

If you took basket weaving you would at least learn how to do something productive.

Mark Twain said something along the lines of not letting school interfere with your education. Read subjects being taught in colleges today and you can see that there ain't much educatin' going on. We used to joke about a course in basket weaving but that would be a great improvement over courses like "women's studies".

But Mike,he smiles while he's dismantling the country.

It's sort of like, I'm okay but you're a mess.

Good to have Waffler back. He is always good for some comic relief.

jim k, Austin, Tx

Good to have Komrad Waffler weighing in even if his comments make no sense. His dislike of this quote most likely is because Mr. Sowell is an African American, is brilliant, and is conservative. Libs just can't stand black conservatives.

My favorite L.Neal Smith quote is this one: "Government is a disease masquerading as it's own cure".

This is a good reason to stop arresting people for prostitution. Both parties in this case have something that the other party wants and they make a business deal to provide it. Cops waste many man and woman hours setting up traps to catch prostitutes and "johns" , time better spent catching real criminals. There seems to be a notion in this country that if something is a "sin" then it should be against the law. Maybe some puritanical instincts still carry over from when "witches" were burned.

Prohibition never works, almost everyone knows this, even the slugs in our congress. This being the case, why on earth do we have this "War on Drugs". Someone(s) up there must be making a ton of money on this and ain't it a great way to control folks. And governments always need a "war" of some kind to keep the sheep in the pen.

The UN is a rat's nest of reds and should be sent to N. Korea.

jim k, Austin, Tx

Oops, should read "main" instead of top.

jim k, Austin, Tx

It may not be the "top" espionage center but it's way up near the top.

Tell that to His Majesty, King Barack.

jim k, Austin, Tx

Our current crop of legislators seem to believe that their powers are unlimited. Certainly King Barack thinks so.

States give these powers to the feds when they accept money from Washington.
