It is use and abuse of our fiat paper money system through manipulation that makes the poor poorer and the rich richer. This quote would be much more applicable in a rare metals based monetary system. As it applies to our debt money system, it is this system that allows the rich banking families to redistribute the wealth of the nation from the laborers' pocket into the their pocket. Who is it we owe everything to including the lives and future labor of the next generation?

This gets a thumbs down from the immoral Communists, especially those in government.

Since rich people are the ones who own businesses and create jobs, it's only natural that liberals want to raise their taxes. "Soak the Rich" has been the rallying cry of democrats and liberal republicans for years. Unfortunately, people who buy into that nonsense also vote.

jackliberty, Greensboro

Methinks Lincoln, the great destroyer of your freemanship and liberty, was Churchill's source for this quote, albeit abbreviated. Try Thomas DeLorenzo's books about Lincoln. Eye opening to say the least.

M. Brown, Marco

Amen brother!

Waffler, Smith, Arkansas

The rich only get rich by providing goods and services to the poor at a reasonable cost effective price. The capitalist micro fallacy is that one can get rich by selling ones product at a high price and paying ones labor a low wage. When all "rich" do this then all "poor" wage earners are unable to purchase the products of the other. Of a truth the only place "rich" get their "riches" is from the "poor". Henry Ford new the game and he got really rich by producing cars at a cheaper and cheaper price, paid a good wage to his people for the times, and every one was happy. Churchill's quote flies in the face of the English Corn Laws which were enacted to prevent all wealth in England landing in the hands of some small percentage of the people.

E Archer, NYC

Me thinks Waffler protesteth too much. The statement is self-evident.

And you don't make the poor richer by forcing them and their posterity to stay in society's basement all their lives, either. Trickle down economics historically haven't worked well, or if so only temporarily, while some of the best reforms made to this country have been, well, baby socialism. I'm by no means a socialist, but that doesn't mean I think all socialistic things are evil.

Fredrick W. Sillik

Churchill was wrong, you do make the poor richer by making the rich poorer.

Anonymous, Brooklyn, NY

The poor makes the rich richer by running after the satisfaction of his/her desires, which are driven by all sort of seductive manipulation (i.e religion, social, marketing, etc). Maybe the poor can set resistance with his/her little money by not buying the new ipod, iphone, inonsense, etc. Nixon Jean-Baptiste

Chris, New Orleans

Only the poor hate this quote.

Mike, Norwalk

Natural law economics 101. Those religious patrons of socialism, genuflecting to the Communist Manifesto's second plank, Keynesian economics and related anti-fiscal law dogmas will never get the absolute of the statement.

J Carlton, Calgary

I agree with Anonymous...we should stop giving the poor food stamps and welfare...and force them to take responsibility for themselves and stop training their posterity to be welfare basket cases as well. Save for the truly disabled,

L. Hanson, Edmonton, Canada

This is a terrible quote and has nothing to do with liberty.

Carlton: get your head out of your a##; and get out of my country.

Bruce Sammut, Naples FL

Perfect as we head deeper into the pit of socialism.

Bruce Sammut, Naples FL

PS. Do you wonder why Obama removed the Churchill bronze bust from the White House?

J Carlton, Calgary

Hanson...BITE ME ;-) And yes it has everything to do with liberty...in that Churchill is pointing to the FACT that it is WRONG to steal from people to support PARASITES. But you're quite simply too stupid and immoral to recognize the FACT. Have a nice day being a Canuck Communist...quite unlike most Canucks I might add...

Elizabeth, Astoria, NY

I think it is just right. There is nothing wrong with being rich. When opportunities arise to become rich, the poor will go for it, too.

J Carlton, Calgary

On a lighter note: The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing this year the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to over 46 million people. Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Joseph, San Diego

Everyone is missing the point. You don't take away from people who work hard in their lives to better themselves and give to the lazy people who don't care to try and better themselves. Why should I pay more taxes if I worked my way through school and got an awesome job that pays me well vs. the people on welfare doing nothing but sleeping all day and hanging out. I see it all the time, I see it even in my family.

Mio, Glasgow

By making rich richer You make poor poorer.

Robert, Surrey

Disagree!

Patrick Henry, Red Hill

A corollary of A. Lincoln's observation:

" You cannot make the weak man strong by making the strong man weak."

Mick, Manchester

Sound bite divisive politics at its very best.

For those in the room, How many hats have you worn ? And to What Degree have You governed ? To What degree has your contentment been measured ? There will come a day when the lion will lay down with the lamb, But, that is not now ! But then there is economic peace through liberty and freedom obtainable. Where do we find the greatest degree of peaceful life ? Where do we find the greatest degree of unrest ? A three tier system of cooperation is needed with any building project. What is a king with a builder ? What can a kingdom become with an Honest Builder ? There is an inherent attribute within every individual to compute and build according to their need. This house of understanding, greatly manipulated ! Shame on those who would make peace and do not ! Man wishes to " Know " that which is his, is. As well he should. There is an Open Vision which brings peace, for without, the people are lost. Some know of this vision, but many would corrupt, even in not knowing. Constraining within Orthodoxy the knowledge of such peace. Understanding birthed from Commonsense, " stands " the test of time. It is the gift of God. The Path to Peace through Strength is paved with honesty tempered with compassion. The fear to lend or barrow, when there should be none. Demographics determine what is wealth, not all people are measure the same. Agur was a very wise man, Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me. Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain. Surly the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the ringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife. Wrath is oppression through socialism, regardless of how many times you change its color. As a builder I work for those who have need, and equitable exchange for my Value. This station in life is no less or more, than the other. The poor and needy you have always, therefore it is best to maintain and protect their individual liberty. Peace is made in such ways. Give the dog a bone and stop the infighting, by what ever means given to the task.

Jack, Phoenix

But you sure as heck make the rich richer by making the poor poorer!

Can you provide a citation for this quote? I've seen it attributed to Winston Churchill many times, but can't find a citation.

Reuters fact checkers state:   The quote comes from a 1916 work by William J. H. Boetcker in a 1916 booklet called Inside Maxims, which later became known as the Ten Cannots.
Where ever it came from...it speaks the truth...
