How can you do the former without doing the latter?

Judith, a reply to your comment yesterday about alcohol prohibition being eliminated because people started using gas in their cars instead of alcohol. This makes no sense. There were two main reasons why prohibition was over in 1933. It simply did not work, made thugs rich, and many people were murdered in the streets during this period. The main reason was that the feds weren't getting any taxes from illegal booze. Prohibition of alcohol and drugs always makes the "problem" at least ten times worse.

To build on Jim's statement, burning alcohol (ethanol) generates more formaldehyde and ozone than gasoline, making it a poor choice as a fuel for urban areas. It also contains far less energy potential per gallon resulting in decreased motor vehicle range. And it is more expensive to produce than petroleum distillates and could not be produced (and still cannot) in great enough quantities to support a modern industrial economy. In short, a free market will decide what fuel is the best if we let it.

Justin and Jim, Guess I was a bit gullible when I watched a video from one of my sources, www.brasschecktv.com , that had a speaker in a group talking about this and said he knew people who were using alcohol in their cars, buying from local farmers. He indicated it was less polluting than gas, and they do use ethanol in cars now?? If I find that video I will refer you to it if you want to check it out. I know little about engines and the chemistry of fuel burning so maybe I was too hasty in assuming he was credible.

Justin, a few additions to your alcohol comments. A close friend, now diciest, had an operation making high protein animal feed. With a few alterations (using solar in different parts of the process; centrifuges, and other innovative techniques) he increased the quantity and quality of his feed with a large quantity of ethanol as a by-product (virtually free) Old cook um and vacuum suck um is indeed an expensive process if alcohol is all you are trying to get. By changing what is grown for animal feed only (not human consumption) and processing it in such a manner, the feed stock animals would be healthier and the fuel would be cheaper. The energy potential per gallon doesn't have anything to do with how much energy is extracted or realized. Alcohol will vaporize and burn 70 to 90 percent efficient while gasoline at best is realizing about 25 percent efficiency (potential BTUs don't really mean much). Of course you have to raise the compression, advance the timing, and a few other modifications to run alcohol but in manufacturing, it wouldn't cost anything different. The government will not allow truly efficient gasoline engines. Gasoline has been changed so that the old Pogue and other evaporative systems won't work. In college, we modified an old fully loaded 500 ci Cadillac to get about 26 mpg and, a 4 cyl car with air to get about 70 mpg. That's old technology that could be used today to lower the cost of automobiles. Mr. Obamunist Goodwrench the assassin (having nationalized much of Amerika's auto industry) wants $7 a gallon gasoline to kill what's left of the economy. Alcohol can be produced in sufficient quantities to support a modern industrial economy but that has nothing to do with reality (that will not be allowed either and the reasons for it will not be allowed to go public). That same reality says, there is no free market to decide what fuel is to be used. Electric and steam powered vehicles were more advanced than petroleum based transportation when the powers that be decided there wasn't enough power, control, and profit in it for them. After all, if it was about free market, we'd be drilling in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, South and North Dakota, etc. As to this quote, it is always easier to tell people what fuel to use than to let them find out what is really happening.
